Non LIFE MASTER SECTIONAL AUGUST 2 - 3 Don't forget our annual sectional for those who haven't made LM. We's upgraded it this year - anyone who is not a Life Master can play. Call Mun Takeda at 284-3750 if you still need a partner. The games are at 10 am and 2 pm, with lots of refreshments by our hospitality commitee of Dora Gostanian and Mary Jo Davila. Don't forget to stay for lunch and learn in between sessions with Byron Steinert and Skip Miller. Those with 0-10 points play free on Saturday morning. And to top it off, we have a one session Swiss team game on Sunday. Join us this weekend. BUILDING COMMITTEE Our building committee has made a recommendation to the board, and the board has approved an agreement with our realtor to negotiate to rent a new location. We'll have more information when it is available. |

FACES The Las Vegas NABC was the fourth largest tournament ever held in North America. Its 19,720 tables was beaten only by two previous Las Vegas tournaments and one in Toronto. We had quite a few winners. Gwen Davey and John Simpson were third in Flight C in the evening 299er pairs and fourth in the 299er pairs. Terri Stitt was third in the 299er evening pairs, fifth in Flight B in the Education Foundation 299er pairs, and third with Glen Ford in the bracket 19 KO teams. John Simpson was second twice in the 299er pairs. Judy Zimmerer was second and fifth in the 299er pairs and third in bracket 9 of the KO teams. Bob Durbrow was fourth in the compact KO teams and won bracket 4 of the KO teams. Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda were second in KO teams and ninth in the Spingold Master Teams. John and Tina Renna were second in bracket 16 of the KO teams and also second in bracket 8. They also took second in the 299er pairs. Rose Boot had a section top in the open pairs. Jay Roll and Larry Cavanaugh were 17th in the Truscott Senior Swiss Teams and fifth in the side game. Warren Cederborg and Richard Meffley were fifth in the open pairs. Bill Glass was third in the side game. Jim Tritt won the KO teams and the consolation Compact KO teams. Rick Whitworth and Shirley Blum were 40th in the Webhar Open Pairs and 35th in the Fast Open Pairs. Bert Rettner was tenth in flight B in the open pairs. Shirley Blum and Steve McConnell were 23rd in the Mixed Board-a-Match Teams and 18th in the Open Swiss Teams. Richard Meffley and Gerard Laquerriere were in the 25th Open Swiss Teams. Jay Roll and Gerard Laquerriere were 16th in the open pairs. At the Palo Alto sectional, Richard Meffley won the evening Swiss teams and was second in the Swiss teams At the Los Angeles regional, Bill Glass was fourth in the side game and third in flight B in the fast pairs. John Simpson was third in Flight C in the side game, fourth in flight C in the afternoon Swiss teams, and first in the consolation KO teams, bracket 3. Welcome to new members Gloria Durbrow, Joann Huebsner, Marilyn Kendall, and Sona Saroyan. Our condolences go to the family of Bill Frampton, who recently passed away. CHANGES Last month's ACBL Bulletin stated that a new Laws book will be in effect on September 1, 2008. Most of the changes are to make the rules clearer, but there are a few changes. One change is that you may not tell your partner that he has turned a trick incorrectly after the next trick is started. The new Laws are still with the printer, so it will be very difficult to enforce them if no one has a copy. The ACBL Board also made a few changes at its summer meeting. One change is that the requirement for Life Master will go up to 500 master points, plus more gold, red, and silver points, effective with new members after December 31, 2009. This also affects current members who let their dues lapse. So please, keep your membership dues current. |

CLUB NEWS Top Oakhurst players for July were Ken Doig and Gardner Murray, followed by Claire Molnar, Karen Henning, Don McCartin, Mike Molinari, and Paul Mertens. In Madera, Richard Meffley was top point winner for July, followed by Denny Green, Judy Hecht, and Virginia Hailey. Denny Green took back the lead for 2008, with Dan Cartago and Everett Bondeson right behind. This is the last month to qualify for the North American Pairs for 2008 - 2009. The club games pay half red points at about three times the normal club rate for master points. Those who qualify may play in the unit finals in November. The second week in August is the summer STAC games, with silver points to the winners. This is the first time we've had a pairs STAC game in the summer - some of the games will be holding the STAC games, and some will not. Skip Miller was the top player at the Fresno Bridge Club in June, followed by Steve Sharp and Maggie Mahaffey. Estee Strombotne was tops of the 99ers. North American Pair games continue in July and August. July games are scheduled for Sunday, July 13 at 1 pm and Wednesday, July 16 at 7 pm. These games pay half red points, and pay about triple the master points to the winners, compared to regular club games. Those who qualify by placing in the top half of their flight can continue to the unit finals, the district finals, and possibly the national finals next March. If you miss these games in July, check your August calendar for more chances to win red points. Top Fresno players for July was Skip Miller, followed by Maggie Mahaffey and Steve Sharp. Skip Miller now leads for 2008. Estee Strombotnee was the top 99er for May. George Dalition still leads for 2008. |
