CONTEMPORARY CONVENTIONS
Mike Savage,
Director of our Monday, Tuesday, Tuesday night, and Wednesday Club games, and a successful tournament bridge player at the highest levels, has provided Club members with write-ups on conventions in use today by winning pairs and teams.Mike Savage learned bridge while attending Pacific High School in San Bernardino from his parents and, after a three-year stint in the Army as a Russian translator, became a Life Master in 1965. He played competitive tournament bridge for the next seven years, sometimes having the opportunity to play with John Swanson, Paul Soloway, Dick, Noreen and Rhoda Walsh, Paul Ivaska, Jon Wittes and had a regular partnership with Ed Davis.
For the next eight years, he semi-retired from competitive bridge, concentrating on a career of Technical Illustration and then Commercial Art. In about 1979 he pulled up stakes, moved to Ajijic, in Jalisco Mexico with his good friend Andre Bruley and stayed there on a shoestring for about five years, writing, teaching and playing social bridge.
Mike returned to the States to help take care of his parents who then lived in Crestline. During this time he began to direct duplicate clubs in Los Angeles and eventually took over directing the Riverside Bridge club three days a week as well as at the Beverly Hills Bridge club two days a week.
Mike also is an ACBL tournament director and has been a director at many local tournaments. He plays professionally with students at clubs and Southern California tournaments. In his spare time he regularly competes in tournaments with partners Gerry Bare, Rick Henderson, Kent Mignocchi and others and is renewing a partnership with Corinne Kirkham. He regularly gives away comprehensive write-ups of commonly used conventions at tournaments and is a Diamond Life Master with over 6200 points. He can be reached over the internet for bridge related questions at (Mike, the duck in Spanish): patomike@attbi.com.
