Minutes—Unit Board Meeting

November 17, 2005

 

Members Present:  Howard Reed, John Renna, Richard Betcher, Mary Lou DaCosta, Margaret Mahaffee, Paul Messner, Judy Nicholson and Mark Stern.  As a quorum was present, the Meeting was called to order at approximately 5:30 p.m.

 

Treasurer’s Report:    John Renna’s financial report was reviewed and approved.

 

Sectional:  Mark Stern reported a profit at the Fall Sectional but attendance was down by 13 ½ tables.

           

EZ Bridge:  Gloria Easterly was invited to the Board meeting to discuss EZBridge classes but failed to attend.  The Board discussed the need for EZBridge classes on site and a need to increase membership.  The topic was tabled for discussion at a later meeting. 

 

Elections:  There are 6 Director vacancies and 6 candidates.  Ballots will be mailed with the Aces and Places publication which is currently at the printer.  Stuffing the envelopes was discussed.

 

New Business:

1.      Christmas Party Game:  Special invitations to certain members were discussed.  Rik Betcher and Judy Nicholson will be in charge of invitations.  

2.      Distinguished Service Award:  The Board determined the winners of both the Distinguished Service Award and Ace of the Club.  . 

3.      Alcohol at Games:  The Unit has a standing rule that alcohol at games is prohibited without prior notification and approval of a member of the Board of Directors. 

4.      Board of Directors Annual Dinner:  December 11, 2005 was chosen as the date for the dinner.  There was a discussion and decision as to the guests to be invited.

5.      Cell Phones: The Board agreed that Cell Phones ringing during play are a disruption to players and ask that Cell Phones be silenced, if at all possible, as a courtesy to others.

Old Business:

1.      Carpet:  The dire straits of the carpet was discussed.  It was decided that the carpet would be cleaned and beginning January 1, 2006, food would be served only from the kitchen area.  Players may take food and beverage to their bridge table for consumption and are responsible to clean up after themselves.  The Board may make exceptions during special games, parties and Sectionals if it is deemed necessary.

2.      Birthday Games:  It was unanimously agreed that the unit would cease having monthly “Birthday Games”, featuring free play to players with birthdays within the month.
