Dorothy Anne Norris Cady

Dorothy Anne Norris Cady passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 20, 2007, surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy was the second child born to Edward Ralph Norris and Mary Josephine Norris in Staples, Minnesota on April 7, 1911. She attended Staples elementary and secondary schools and graduated in 1926 from Staples High School as Valedictorian one month after turning 15 years old. She then enrolled at Stanford University where she joined the Sigma Kappa sorority. She later transferred to the University of Minnesota to major in nursing education where she received her B.S. degree in Nursing and completed graduate work. She taught nursing students. Later she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Master of Arts Degree from California State University, Fresno (CSUF) and enrolled in graduate work at University of Southern California. Dorothy became a professor of education at CSUF. For two years Dorothy was assigned as a consultant to the Ministry of Education, U.S.A.I.D. to Jamaica. She enjoyed her Jamaican friends and visited with them often over the years. Dorothy retired from California State University, Fresno after 22 years and was granted Emeritis status. Dorothy enjoyed playing golf and bridge and participated in line dancing until she was 92 years old. She volunteered for many years in the Community Medical Center (former Valley Medical Center) gift shop and Garden House Tea Room. She was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority for 80 years, as well as the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education, and Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society in Education. She was an active member of Fresno Alumnae Panhellenic for many years. Dorothy was married to Leo Clark Cady who passed away in 1956. She was also preceded in death by a sister and a brother. She is survived by two daughters, Carol Cummins and her husband Don, and Lea Cady-Lewis; and grandchildren, Timothy Tavarez and his wife Theresa of Los Angeles, Tamra Tavarez of Los Angeles and Dale Lewis of Orange County. She is also survived by her sister, Marie Wilder of Palos Verdes; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Luncheon to celebrate Dorothy Cady's life will be held at Grand Occasions in Fresno on Sunday, September 2, 2007, at 12:00 noon. Reservations are required.
