DORA GOSTANIAN NEW LM in MONTEREY Congratulations to Dora Gostanian, who made LM in Monterey by taking third in the Bracket 3 Knockout Teams with Mary Jo Davila, and Richard and Vivian Betcher. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD The 2009 recipient is Jill Wood. Since moving here from the Bay Area, where she was vice president and president of our new home, District 21, she has been a great help to our members. She took over a task that none of us want to do, but all of us are grateful that she got it done, producing a new roster in 2008. She spearheaded fundraising for our move to the new bridge center - her efforts brought in over $20,000 in donations, raffles, auctions, and other projects. We're glad to have Jill as a member of the Fresno Unit. Thanks, Jill. GRAND NATIONAL TEAMS Grand National Teams start in February for Flights A(under 5000 mp) and C(nonLM under 500mp). UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links Bay Area Tournaments California and nearby tournaments MARY JO DAVILA We are saddened by the loss of Mary Jo, who passed away on January 21. She was admired and appreciated by our members, and played faithfully in almost every game. She loved bridge and the many friends that she made at the club. Mary Jo has served on the club's Board of Directors for several years but is best know for her job as Hospitality Chairman, which she shared with Dora Gostanian. She and Dora provided players with wonderful food and treats, mostly home made, at our club tournaments and special event. Mary Jo always had a smile on her face and a great sense of humor. You could hear her laughter throughout the playing room. She will be greatly missed by us all. The

Their phone number hasn't changed. We wish them well in their new home. Get well wishes go to Karen Laws, who is recuperating from hip replacement surgery. Condolences go the family of Bruce Smith, who was our clubhouse co-chairman for many years, and a former unit president. He moved to Sacramento to be near his son in the last few years. He passed away on October 2. There will be a memorial service in February. We recently heard that Berdie Templer passed away in April. She taught bridge for many years, and regularly played at our club until the last few years. She did what few of did - she met Charles Goren, and had a photograph to prove it. Our sympathy to her family. Our condolences go to Nancy Honeywell, whose husband Jim recently passed away. Jim and Nancy played together in the Madera Bridge Club for well over 40 years, and were usually the winning pair. The Tuesday and Thursday afternon bridge groups were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Vi Berg, on her birthday, December 21. She was a delight to know and a friend to many. We miss her. Our condolences go to Carolyn Smith, whose husband Barry recently passed away. Due to Barry's health, they have seldom been able to play at the bridge club in the last few years. We miss Barry. Our sympathy is extended to Ann Barnes, our former unit secretary, who is now in Florida, Ann's husband Harold recently passed away.
