Non LIFE MASTER SECTIONAL
AUGUST 2 - 3

We've changed the August sectional a little bit.   It is now open to all who have not yet made Life Master, not just those with under 300 master points.   So if you are still looking for your last gold or silver points, you are eligible to play and win silver points at the sectional.

We will have stratified pairs on Saturday and Sunday at 10 am, and again at 2 pm on Saturday.   Lunch and learn is between sessions both days - lunch is free if you try to learn a little.  Stratified Swiss teams start at 2 pm on Sunday, right after the lunch and learn.  Dora Gostanian and Mary Jo Davila plan lots of hospitality.    Call Mun Takeda, 284-3750 if you need a partner.  We'll have prizes for the winners, and refreshments for everyone, so come and enjoy!

BUILDING COMMITTEE
The building committee is still hard at work.  The Unit board has asked for a recommendation by fall.  There may be a recommendation before that.

MARY JO DAVILA MAKES LM!

Mary Jo Davila placed third in two Knockout team events at the recent Sacramento Regional to become our newest Life Master!   Mary Lou is on the unit board, and has been working on sectional hospitality for the last few tournaments.   We appreciate her hard work, and congratulate her on making LM.  Way to Go!!

PLACES  AND FACES

Congratulations to Jean Kesler, who recently made gold Life Master.   Jean has taught bridge to many players, and was a club director on Friday nights and Tuesday mornings for many years.
At the Sacramento Regional, Michael Molinari, Paul Boyd, Dora Gostanian and  Mary Jo Davila were third in the Bracket 3 KO teams.   Peter Weber and Susan Vildosola were fourth in the 299er pairs.   Angelina Heisdorf and Gwen Davey were fifth in B in the 299er pairs.  Howard Reed, Pat Simpson, Steve Sharp and Carol Miller were fifth in flight C of the Swiss teams. Pete Weber, Sue Vildosola, Paul Messner, and  Sandy Richardson  won Bracket 4 of the KO teams.  Dora Gostanian, Cor and Ina Yssels, and Mary Jo Davila  were third in the Bracket 4 KO teams.  John and Tina Renna were sixth in flight B of the 299er pairs.   Richard Meffley and Suzie Cederborg were 12th in the open pairs.  Mark Stern and Dave Shuster were second in the fast pairs, with Bill Glass third in Flight C.   Richard Meffley and Warren Cederborg won the California Capital Swiss teams,  Gerard Laquerriere and Paul Schommer  were fifth in the California Capital Swiss teams and won the evening Swiss teams.   Bill Glass and Mark Stern were third in the compact KO team consolation.   Rick Whitworth was second in one open pairs and 14th in another.   John Simpson was third and sixth in the 299er pairs sixth in flight B of another 299er pairs.
Richard Meffley won the Swiss teams at the Hollister sectional with Jay Roll and Suzie and Warren Cederborg.
Welcome to new members Anna Amrein, Lucy Crawford, Linda Garrett, Lois High, Maggie Houlihan, Lynn Howell, and Nancy Rowland.
Our wishes for a speedy recovery go to Denny Green, who is now in rehab.  The players at the Madera game miss him at table 1.
Our condolences go to the family of Rod Bobo.  Rod hadn't played at the club for several years because his work schedule conflicted with our games.   He was an excellent bridge player, and one of Fresno's top chess masters.
We are sorry to report that Gail Andrews passed away recently.   She was D22 treasurer, managed several regional tournaments in Orange County, and recently became District 22's representative on the ACBL Board of Directors.   She always had the interest of players at heart.  She was an asset to District 22, and will be missed.

CLUB NEWS
NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS

The Monday afternoon 49er game is changing to a 99er game, effective in July.  If you've just gone over 50 points, you can still join the Monday game.  Call Mary Lou Da Costa 439-8040 if you need help getting a partner.
North American Pair games continue in July and August.  July games are scheduled for Sunday, July 13 at 1 pm and Wednesday, July 16 at 7 pm.   These games pay half red points, and pay about triple the master points to the winners, compared to regular club games.   Those who qualify by placing in the top half of their flight can continue to the unit finals, the district finals, and possibly the national finals next March.   If you miss these games in July, check your August calendar for more chances to win red points.

Top Oakhurst players in June were Don McCartin, Claire Molnar, Cory Cole, Ken Doig,  and Gardner Murray.   Top Madera winners for May were Bob Mortimer and Everett Bondeson, followed by Betty Eden and Dan Cartago.  Top June player was Dan Cartago, followed by Bob, Everett, and Betty.    Dan now leads for 2008, followed by Everett, Betty, Bob, and Dennie Green.
We wish a speedy recovery to Keiko Collins, who will be having surgery soon.  Barbara Thacker will be in charge of Tuesday morning games while Keiko is recovering.
Top Fresno players for May was Skip  Miller, followed by Maggie Mahaffey and Steve Sharp.  Steve Sharp still leads for 2008,  with three players less than a master point behind. George Dalition was the top 99er for May and is now the leader for 2008.
