PEGGY OCHS MEMORIAL GAME MAY 4

It's time for a pot luck Unit Championship Sunday May 4.  The pot luck lunch starts about noon, game time is 1 pm.   The game is named in honor of Peggy Ochs, who directed  all the afternoon games at one time or another, including the Unit Game on Sundays.  Those who remember her know how much fun it was to play in her games.  We remember all our players who passed away in the last year.

BUILDING FUND
The Building fund is increasing every month because several years ago we agreed to put $1 of every player's card fee into the fund.  However, that is not enough to buy a building unless we get additional funding or loans.   Collier Tingey International is searching the entire Fresno area for a suitable location.   We would like to know if our members are willing to donate or loan to the building fund.   Please read the enclosed letter, and reply if you are willing to contribute to the building fund.

UNIT NEWS
We are now selling bridge items at the clubhouse - convention card holders and attractive bridge name tags.   Any profits from the sales will go to improve the bridge club or to the Building Fund.   Check out the name tag examples at the clubhouse, and put in your order.

VISALIA SECTIONAL
Don't forget the Visalia sectional, May 16 - 18.  It's only a short drive south on 99 from Fresno at the very pleasant Lakes clubhouse.   The Visalia unit members always provide great hospitality durring the tournament.  You can always get home early on Sunday from the Swiss teams because they serve a lunch during the team game. The lunch is well known for its delicious salads.  We won't be playing bridge at the Fresno clubhouse on Saturday or Sunday, so get partners and teammates and visit Visalia.

PLACES  AND FACES

Judy Rosenthal has moved to San Miguel De Allende, Mexico, where she plays bridge about four times a week.  We hear she just made Life Master.  Congratulations!
Judy Zimmerer was second in knockout teams bracket 3 and 9 at the Chandler Arizona Senior Regional.  John Simpson was second in the 199er Swiss at the San Mateo Sectional.
At the Bakersfield sectional, Skip Miller and Byron Steinert were second in the open pairs.  Jay Roll and Richard Meffley won the compact knockout teams.   John and Della Schnell, with Richard Meffley and Warren Cederborg, won the Swiss teams.  Mon Takeda, Pat Delamontanya, Andrea Sigmund, and Allyson Farrell won flight D of the Swiss teams.   Gerard Laquerriere was third in the stratified pairs with Warren Cederborg, second in the compact KOs with Alice Pickens, plus Warren and Suzie Cederborg, and third in the Swiss teams with Jay Roll.  Well done, all!
The Bakersfield sectional had its usual fine hospitality.   Members brought lots of refreshments every day.   The Sunday Swiss team went quickly as they had a nice dinner between sessions.   They didn't have their usual sandwiches - this time it was a lasagna dinner with many salads, garlic bread, and of course ice cream for dessert.
Welcome to new member Douglas Griswold of Oakhurst.
Get well wishes go to Angelina Heisdorf, who has been hospitalized.  It's good to see Jackie Noblat and Bruce Smith playing again after missing bridge for quite a while.
Our sympathy goes to Betty Jean Rose, on the loss her husband, Wes.  Wes played in the 299er games on Tuesday and Thursday and was such a joy.
Sympathy also goes to the family of Donna Freeman.   Donna also played on Thursday afternoon - a fun and nice lady at our games.

CLUB NEWS

The week of May 5 through May 9 is Sectional Tournament at Clubs week - play nearly every day and win silver points.  The Tuesday morning game, the Thursday afternoon game, and the Saturday afternoon game will not be STAC games.   Due to a conflict with the international fund game, no STAC game is allowed Thursday afternoon.
There will be no games on the weekend of the Visalia Sectional.  The Friday afternoon game will be held May 16, but there will be evening game or games on Saturday or Sunday so that we can enjoy the tournament and the hospitality of our neighbor to the south.   We're planning a surprise for those who play at the club after the sectional - we hope to have the carpet cleaned while the clubhouse is empty.
Friday night is aiming for one individual game permonth, usually the fourth Friday.   This month it will be on May 23.  You don't need a partner to play, just let Richard know you're coming so he can save a place for you.    Watch out for the Worldwide pair game Friday evening June 6.  Players throughout the world play the same hands.  Match points are scored across the entire field, and at the local club.
Top Madera player for April was Denny Green, followed by Dan Cartago and Betty Eden.  Denny Green leads for 2008, followed by Dan Cartago, Larry Slates, Richard Meffley, Betty Eden, and Gay Slates.

Top Fresno players for March were Bert Rettner, followed by  Wanda Cardella.   Steve Sharp leads for 2008.  Edward and Theresa Grootendorst were the top 99ers for March, followed by Dolores Beebe.   Linda Coppersmith still leads for 2008.
Top players for April in Oakhurst are Don McCartin, Ken Doig, Burke Zane, Al Crane, Gardner Murray, and Mike Molinari.
