PEGGY OCHS MEMORIAL GAME MAY 4

Our annual pot luck game in memory of Peggy Ochs and all our members who have passed away will be held the first Sunday of May, May 4.    Peggy was a club owner, directing  games before the unit moved to the clubhouse and for many years after.   She taught bridge at Weinstock's (do you remember Weinstock's?) when they were promoting bridge at all their stores.  She was a friend to all bridge players, and made sure that everyone had a good time when they came to play bridge.

We especially remember those who have passed away in the last year.

This is also a pot luck lunch, so bring a favorite salad, dessert, or entree for all to enjoy.

MORE LESSONS START IN APRIL

Dora Gostanian and Mun Takeda will start the third installment of their series of lessons on Tuesday April 1 at 6:30 p.m. and Friday April 4 at 9 a.m.   The Friday lessons will repeat the Tuesday lesson each week.   This time the emphasis is on defensive play - something that gives most of us a lot of trouble.   The lessons will also include reviews of bidding and declarer play.   If you want to improve your defensive game, come to the bridge club and learn from them.  Let your friends know  - anyone who has been playing bridge and hasn't had a lesson on defensive play can learn from these lessons.   Call 244-9944 or 299-158 for more information.

PLACES  AND FACES

The Detroit NABC was a great tournament.   The tournament was all at one big center on different levels - if you didn't mind walking around in circles to get where you were going, it was fine.   They had lots of Greek and other restaurants a short walk or a stop on the People Mover away.   Who would have guessed that Greek dinners always come with peas?
Farid Assemi, Ed Wojewoda, and Jim Tritt were sixth in the Jacoby Open Swiss Teams and 17th in the Vanderbilt Teams.   Ed was 17th in the Silodor Open Pairs and 35th in the Lebhar IMP Pairs.  Pat Simpson was second in the consolation KO Bracket 6.   John Simpson won the 49er pairs twice,  was fourth in the 299er Swiss teams, and third in Compact KO teams bracket 7.  John also won the $50 drawing from Barclay Bridge Supplies and spent it on more bridge books.  Rose Boot was 4th in B in the Swiss teams and second in the side game.  Richard Meffley was 14th in the Swiss teams.
At the Las Vegas Regional, Judy Zimmerer was sixth in C in the side game, 6th in C in the evening Swiss teams, and third in the KO teams bracket 7.
At San Diego Regional, Howard Reed and Pat Simpson were sixth in the side game and 3rd in the bracket 5 KO teams.  John and Della Schnell and Suzie and Warren Cederborg were second in the KO teams.  The Schnells were also eighth in the open pairs.
Welcome to new members Andy Jones and Elaine Naman.
Our condolences to the family of Phyllis Willet Stevens, who was a long time member of the Fresno unit.  She moved to the Monterey area several years ago.
Our condolences also to the family of Irene Quiggle.  Irene played here in Fresno before moving to Arizona to be near her son.

CLUB NEWS
Top Oakhurst players for March are Wally Cucura, Paul Mertens, Don McCartin, Betty Ann Dunn, Burke Zane and Aileen and Byron Davis.   Top Madera winner for March is Pearl McGinnis, followed by Larry and Gay Slates, Carol Kaufman and Richard Meffley.
Maggie will have her Guess Your Score games on the last Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon on April.  If you can guess what your score will be, you win!   The individual game was popular in February, so we will try it again on Friday April 18 at 7 p.m.   You don't need a partner, you play with everyone.  Just come.

Top Fresno players for February were Verlee O'Neill, followed by Barbara Thacker.  Steve Sharp leads for 2008.  Linda Coppersmith was the top 99er for February, followed by Dolores Beebe.   Linda also leads for 2008.

 INCREASE IN FEES
Our treasurer has reviewed our club house expenses and determined that with increased rent, a large "catch-up" payment last year, and other increased expenses, that the clubhouse fund will soon be out of money.   The clubhouse fund has increased the charge to rent space for their games to all club owners, including the unit.  In order to pay for the increase, the unit will increase card fees to $7.00 for its games, effective April 1.   Other club games may also increase their fees to pay for the increase.
