  THE WINTER SECTIONAL
Top master point winner at the recent sectional was Jay Roll, who won four events.   Maybe he should join the Fresno unit so he can win the President's Award for most master points by a Fresno unit member.  Richard Meffley won the President's award, winning two events and making the overalls in three others.   Top 99er player was Jay Shapiro, who was fourth and fifth in two open events.
Attendance was the best in years, about twenty tables more than we've had in past tournaments.   Dora Gostanian and Mary Jo Davila provided great hospitality, along with those members who brought refreshments to help out.   Dora's barbecue beef sandwiches on Sunday were fantastic as usual.    Tournament director Diane Barton-Paine brought along Bridge-Pads, a new wireless scoring device that looks like a calculator at every table.  They are made in Mountain View, and are still in the experimental stage.  They are still adding improvements to the system.   They are very easy to use at the table.  Nearly everyone who used them told us that they liked them.  Tournament chairman Dave Shuster is making plans for our next sectionals, a non-Life Master sectional August 2 and 3, and the Fall Sectional October 30 - November 2.  Plan to attend.

PRO-AM TEAMS

We've enjoyed Pro-Am teams so much that we will do it again this month.  The team game is scheduled for Sunday March 30 at 1 pm, with a pot luck lunch at 12:15 pm.   We'll have sign-up sheets at the club, but if you forget to sign up, please come early for the pot luck so we can pick teams for the game.   We divide  the players into four groups according to master points, and pick one from each group for each team.  We've found that's a good way to get started and have a lot of competitive teams.

CLUB NEWS

Top Fresno player for January was Steve Sharp, followed by Jay Roll./  Jay Shapiro was the top 99er for January, followed by Judy Malone and Paul Wilday.

Top February winners in Madera were Larry Slates, followed by Richard Meffley, Gay Slates, and Carol Kaufman.  Tops for 2008 are Richard Meffley, Carol Kaufman, Everett Bondeson, and Larry Slates.  Top winners for Oakhurst were Don McCartin, Ken Doig, Gardner Murray, Mike Molinari, and Terry Stitt.

UNIT NEWS
Jill Wood is our new Sunshine Chairman.   Please remind her if any of our members have medical problems that keep them away from the bridge tables, or if there is a death in the family.

*Mike says we left off the words "for a top!"   We're still not sure how someone on lead against 7NT with 12 solid tricks in one suit forgot to double,
