PLAY IN THE WINTER SECTIONAL
FEBRUARY 7-10

Next weekend is our annual winter sectional.   Tournament chairman Dave Shuster announces that there are two sessions a day Thursday thru Saturday with a two session Swiss team (with two flights, Open and under 750 mp) on Sunday.  On Friday we have three sessions.    Special events include a free newcomer pairs for those with 0-10 master points on Friday morning, an IMP pairs game on Saturday`morning, and 299er pairs every session except Friday night and late Sunday.  Pick up a flyer at the bridge club.
In some of our events, we will be using BridgePad to score.  It has been used at several sectionals and at the Nationals in the last few months.  When you use BridgePad, each table has a terminal the size of a calculator.   The north player enters the contact and the result and the east or west pair checks it.  Then the score is transmitted wirelessly to the scorekeeper and entered in the computer.   The only problems have occurred when there was interference with ACBL staff's  walkie talkies.  The scoring is completed faster than ever with BridgePad.
Our Hospitality team, led by Mary Jo Davila and Dora Gostanian will provide refreshments every session.   We ask our members to help with the festivities and bring a favorite food item to one of the sessions.   If you like it, so will the other bridge players.  Please don't be shy in responding if asked to bring refreshments.
The Sunday Swiss team game includes a wonderful meal provided by our hospitality committee.   Come enjoy the meal and the Swiss team game.
If you haven't found a partner for any of the sessions, please call partnership chairman Mun Takeda at 559-284-3750.

MIKE MOLINARI - GOOD WILL

Mike Molinari was chosen by our new district as a member of their Goodwill Committee.   This is quite an honor, based on the service he has given to bridge, especially to the Fresno Unit and to beginners in the lesson programs.   He will receive the award at the next District 21 board meeting in February in Sacramento.   Congratulations and well deserved.

Welcome to new members Nick and Mary Gullo.  They've been playing a lot of bridge at the local clubs already.
Welcome home to Larry and Gay Slates, who were in Mexico for two weeks helping children with cleft palates.
Get well wishes go to Monique Irion and to Cor Yssel, recovering from recent surgery.
For Christmas Jane McCoy's children gave her a plane ticket to Arizona to see her sister - it's been a few years between visits.  Couldn't you hear the chatter when they get together?

Our sympathy is extended to Verlee O'Neill on the loss of her sisters Donna Roessner and Marjorie Bourgeois.  Donna was a former member of our unit.  It was always fun at Donna and Verlee's table.

CLUB NEWS
Pot lucks were very popular in January, with big attendances and lots of food on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.   Also, we had a good crowd of seven teams for the pro-am team potluck.   No potlucks on the calendar
for February; maybe we'll have them in March.   We're celebrating the Leap Year with a Club Championship game in the afternoon of  February 29 and an Individual game in the evening.   With individual games, you don't need a partner, you get a new partner every round.   Just think, this will be the last chance to play on February 29 for four years!
Top Fresno player for December was Steve Sharp, who was also the top player for 2007. Players winning over 100 points included Wanda Cardella, Barbara Thacker, Doris Frazer, and Maggie Mahaffey.   Jay Shapiro was the top 99er for December.  Linda Coopersmith was top 99er for 2007, followed by Dolores Beebe and Sydney Bluestone.
Top January winners in Oakhurst are Don McCartin, Burke Zane, Paul Mertens, Claire Molnar, Al Crane, and Mike Molinari.
Top January  winners in Madera were Everett Bondeson, followed by Richard Meffley, Denny Green, Carol Kauffman, Morgan Johnson, and Dan Cartago.
To celebrate Super Bowl Sunday, we will start bridge at noon to  allow you time to get to your super bowl party!
