   UNIT CHRISTMAS PARTY
ANNUAL MEETING &ELECTION               DECEMBER 9

All members are invited to the annual Christmas party at noon on Sunday, December 9, 2007.   The unit board members will provide plenty to eat before the Unit Championship game at 1 pm.  There will also be a short meeting membership before the game where we have an annual report of the unit's activities, honor some of our members, and vote for the coming year's board of directors.
A ballot is included with this month's issue of the newsletter.  The unit board consists of eleven members, elected for two year terms.  This year we elect six members.  In the last two months we have asked our members to nominate themselves or other members.  Those who have accepted the nominations are Paul Boyd, Kay Chrisman, Laura Da Costa, Mary Jo Davila, Margaret Mahaffey, Richard Meffley, and Jill Wood.
Paul Boyd is currently the unit treasurer.  Kay Chrisman is currently unit secretary.  Laura Da Costa has directed unit games and club games.  Mary Jo Davila was hospitality chairman for the last sectional.  Margaret Mahaffey is our membership chairman.  Richard Meffley is unit president.  Jill Wood is president of our new district, District 21.
Our thanks go to retiring board member Mary Lou Da Costa, who has been clubhouse chairman for several years.
Please mail your ballot to the Fresno Bridge Club, or bring it in person and deposit it in the ballot box before 1 pm on December 9, 2007.

BEV DANIELS MAKES LM
IN PUERTO VALLARTA

Bev and teammates won a knockout event and finished third in another at the Puerto Vallarta regional last month.  Those victories enabled her to make Life Master.  Congratulations!

NORTH AMERICAN BRIDGE CHAMPIONSHIPS
SAN FRANCISCO

The NABC is coming to District 21 now.   If you haven't made plans to play, it is not too late.   San Francisco is always a great place to visit, and with players coming from all over the world to play, it will be quite a tournament.   There are events of all kinds every day for players from beginners to international experts.  There will be lessons every day, and many seminars on various aspects of bridge from directing to teaching to learning about online bridge.  Some of the Fresno Unit members will be helping with hospitality or partnership on Thursday, November 29.  If you will be there that day, and can spare one hour before game time, please let Richard Meffley know.
PLACES  AND FACES
At the Boise Sectional, Hugh Miller won the open pairs, and also finished second in Flight B and fifth in B in the Swiss teams.  Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda won the Swiss teams at the San Ramon sectional.
At the Puerto Vallarta regional, Bev Daniels made Life Master!  Cor and Ina Yssels were first in Flight B in the side game.  Richard and Vivian Betcher were second and third in the side game.  Susan Vildosola and Beverly Daniels won the bracket 3 KO teams.   Michael Molinari,  Paul Boyd, Richard Betcher, and Judith Nicholson were second in Flight B of the evening Swiss teams.  Paul Boyd and Cor Yssels were third in Flight C in the side game.   Judith Rosenthal, Beverly Daniels, and Susan Vildosola were third in Bracket 3 in the KO teams.  Vivian Betcher and Judith Nicholson were first in Flight B side game.   Richard Betcher and Mary Jo Davila were fourth in Flight B open pairs.   Michael Molinari and Paul Boyd were second in flight B open pairs.  Joe Fox won the Knockout teams, and finished fourth in the open pairs.  What a lot of winners from the Fresno Unit!  Congratulations!
The Madera Bridge Club is struggling with attendance as Larry and Gay Slates are visiting Italy, Jackie Reichert is off to Antarctica, Judy Hecht is visiting Bhutan, and Jan and Ed Armbruster are in the Caribbean.  Hopefully they'll all be back to play bridge this month.
Congratulations to Steve and Janet Blumberg on their recent marriage!
Correction!  We are glad to see that Villa Vejvoda is playing bridge again after recent surgery.
Welcome to new members Jennifer Corgiat, Ethan Ronat, and Jay Shapiro.
Long time member Wynona Emerson passed away recently.   We haven't seen Wynona play at our bridge club for a long time, but she remained a member for many years after she made Life Master.
We are sorry that Margie Kenyon recently passed away.  She had been a long time member of the Fresno Unit, but did not get to many tournaments.  It was difficult for her to play bridge in the last year, but she was still able to make Life Master at the Las Vegas regional this summer, coming in second in the knockout teams.   Her family invites her friends to a  luncheon on Monday, December 3, at 11 a.m. at the bridge club in her honor.

CLUB NEWS

It's the season for parties.   The unit will have its Christmas party on Sunday, December 9.  Ginny Dow will have treats and prizes at her 750 game on Thursday, December 13.  Mary Lou will have a pot luck for New Year's Eve on December 31.  If you aren't watching the football games, come to a pot luck on New Year's Day at 12:15.   Maggie will have an open and 750 section that day at 1 pm.  There will be no morning game on New Year's Day.  For those who play in the STAC game on Friday night, December 21, there will also be a holiday celebration.
The week of December 17 through December 23 is Western Conference Sectional Tournament at Clubs week.  All clubs at the Fresno Bridge Club except Tuesday morning and Saturday afternoon will hold silver point games.   The games are held in clubs throughout the western states.  Those with really big scores could come in the overalls and win up to twenty silver points.
The top players in Madera for November were Denny Green and Morgan Johnson.  Top players for October were Everett Bondeson and Jim Honeywell, followed by Larry and Gay Slates.  Everett leads for the year, followed by Dan Cartago and Bob Mortimer.
Burke Zane and Al Crane had a 71% game at the Oakhurst Bridge Club in November.
Steve Sharp was the top player in Fresno for October, followed by Doris Frazer and Barbara Thacker.  Steve still leads for 2007.  Linda Coppersmith was the top 99er for October.  She  is now the top 99er for 2007.

FRESNO FALL SECTIONAL

Attendance at the Fall Sectional was up slightly over recent sectionals - in fact it was the largest attendance since fall of 2002.  Tournament chairman Dave Shuster thanks all who helped with the tournament, including Mary Jo Davila who coordinated hospitality and Mun Takeda who arranged partnerships.  The top master point winner was Warren Cederborg of Visalia, who was less than a point ahead of teammate Richard Meffley.   The president's award, awarded to the top master point winner from the Fresno unit, goes to Richard.   Jay Shapiro, a recent Fresno unit member, won the award for the top 99er, with 6.80 master points. Congratulations!
