| FRESNO SECTIONAL NOVEMBER 1-4 Tournament chairman Dave Shuster is readying the clubhouse for those looking for more silver points at the Fall Sectional. Mary Jo Davila is in charge of hospitality - she may ask you to bring something for the tournament refreshments. We hope many members can help. Scott Campbell from southern California will be the tournament director. He did a great job last time he was here. We have 299er games every session, plus stratified open pair games, Swiss teams on Sunday, and for our beginner players, a free game on Friday morning. Yes, if you have under ten master points, you can play free at 9 am in the newcomer pairs. If your partner left town for the tournament, call partnership chairman Mun Takeda at 431-9215. She will search for a partner for you. We have lots of silver points waiting for you, come win them! NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS NOVEMBER 11 Sunday November 11 is the unit finals of the North American pairs. Nearly 100 players qualified to play at local club games in June, July, and August. A list of qualifiers is posted at the bridge club. In addition, anyone who qualified anywhere in District 21 may play, so long as they don't play at any other unit finals. Sectionally rated red points go to the winners. The unit finals are stratified. Those who qualify may play in the district finals in Burlingame January 19 through 21. Flight A will play two days, Flights B and C will play only one day. The top three pairs in each flight in Burlingame qualify to play at the national finals in March in Detroit, Michigan. CLUB NEWS Margaret Mahaffey was the top master point winner at the Fresno Bridge Club in September, followed by Wanda Cardella, Ray April, and Barbara Thacker. Steve Sharp still leads the master point race for 2007. Linda Coppersmith was the top 99er for September, followed by Dolores Beebe and George Efthemon. George still leads for 2007. Mike Molinari invites beginners to continue playing on Wednesday mornings. The game will be held at 9 am the second Wednesday of the month. The pot luck Pro-Am Swiss team was a big success, with eight teams playing on Sunday. We're thinking of making Swiss teams a monthly event on Sundays. Lessons on Tuesday night at 6:30 pm and Friday morning at 9 have started - if you know any friends who have played a little bridge, it is not too late to start the lessons. Just send them to the club and Dora Gostanian and Mun Takeda will help them learn. Thanks to those who have volunteered to help with the lessons. Dan Cartago was the top master point winner in Madera, followed by Betty Eden. Everett Bondeson holds a lead of less than one point for 2007 over Bob Mortimer and Dan Cartago. UNIT NEWS Next month we'll send out ballots for the 2008-2009 board of directors. If you'd like to be on the ballot to join the unit board, just put your name in the nomination box at the bridge club, or contact any of the unit board members. |
UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links California and nearby tournaments Bay Area TournamentsAll tournaments PLACES AND FACES At the recent Bakersfield sectional, Gerard Laquerriere and Curt Reeves were second and third in the open pairs. Gerard was also second with Warren Cederborg in the open pairs. Jay Roll took second in the compact KO teams. John and Della Schnell, Richard Meffley and Warren Cederborg won the Swiss teams. The Bakersfield folks again had outstanding hospitality, welcoming their friends from throughout the valley with friendly smiles and lots of refreshments. We're waiting for the return of several Fresno members who traveled to Puerto Vallarta for the regional there. A great time was had at Mary Peterson's home by many from Fresno who traveled to Santa Cruz for the recent sectional. Thanks for the hospitality. At the tournament, Jill and Bill Wood were second in the open pairs and also fifth in Flight B. Suzie Graham and Mary Jo Davila were third in flight B in the open pairs. Kathy Jones and Winder Pell were third in Flight E. Della and John Schnell were third in the open pairs. Congratulations and thanks again to Mary, who finished a respectable third in Flight B of the Swiss teams. It's good to see Carol Miller and Sue Vildosola are back playing bridge after recent surgeries. Welcome to new members Ed and Lois Case. Our condolences go to Ron Viera on the loss of his brother, and to Carolyn Lofton on the loss of her son Jim. We are also sad to report that long time member Marcella Miller has passed away. She was an angel in disguise. Also former member Candida Solontay passed away recently. SAN FRANCISCO NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 2 District 21 is hosting the biggest bridge event of the Fall this month - the North American Bridge Championships at the Marriott Hotel in downtown San Francisco. It's special to have this great event so close. The NABC has regional and national events every day, with events for beginners, intermediate players, experienced players, and experts. There will be bracketed KO team events with over a dozen brackets, experts speaking before most of the sessions, frequent Swiss team games, one session games, two session games, and even longer events. There will be meetings to learn more about running clubs, directing, teaching, and other activities. In short, there is something for everyone. Players will come from dozens of countries throughout the world to play in our tournament. Anyone in our unit who goes will have a great experience. Since we are part of District 21, we have been asked to help volunteer for the tournament. Every unit in the district has been asked to help. Volunteer chairman Kathy Venton has asked us for a couple of volunteers for Thursday, November 29. All you need to do is arrive an hour early either for the morning, afternoon, or evening session and help with one of the information or partnership or hospitality or other desks. Let us know if you can help that day. Volunteers for other days, and especially Thursday November 22 are also welcome. |
