LESSONS  FOR BEGINNERS STARTING SOON
TUESDAY EVENING, FRIDAY MORNING

We are starting more beginning  lessons this month - Dora Gostanian is starting Tuesday lessons at 7 pm,  October 9.  Mun Takeda is starting Friday morning lessons at 9 am on October 12.   If you haven't gotten a flyer yet at the bridge club, get one and give it to a friend or post it where people can see it.   You can even print a flyer from the website to give to your friends.  The first two lessons are free.
Mike Molinari's Wednesday morning lessons have concluded with a bang - 10 tables played in the 49er North American Pairs game.  Mike Rouch and Kirk Stewart were first overall.   We've had sixteen new members in the last two months, and most of them have been taking beginning lessons.  Please help us to continue getting new members by helping to advertise the new lesson series.

FALL SECTIONAL NOVEMBER 1-4

We're getting ready for the Fall Sectional next month.  Get your partners ready.  We'll have stratified pair games and 299er games nearly every session, with two flights of Swiss teams on Sunday.   Dora Gostanian is heading the hospitality, with Mun Takeda handling partnerships. We always appreciate help from our members - we are grateful to those who bring refreshments during the tournament.   If you see a sign-up sheet for refreshments, please add your name.   If Dora asks you to bring something, we hope you can.  Call Mun at 284-3750 if you need a partner for any of the sessions.  Dave Shuster is tournament chairman.
CLUB NEWS
CLUB APPRECIATION GAMES

October is the best month for winning master points!   Every club can offer a sectionally rated club appreciation game.   Clubs can even offer a second sectionally rated game if it is a Swiss team game.  The Swiss team games even give 5% gold points.   The only gold point Swiss team game scheduled is Sunday October 21.  Check your calendar and play as many club appreciation games as you can.
September winners from Oakhurst were Fred and Joan Nickerson, Don McCartin, Jim Honeywell, Paul Mertens, and Everett Bondeson.  Betty Eden was the top winner in Madera for August, followed by Morgan Johnson and Denny Green.  Everett Bondeson still leads for 2007, with Bob Mortimer and Dan Cartago right behind.
Steve Sharp was the top master point winner at the Fresno Bridge Club in August, followed by Mary Jo Davila and
Barbara Thacker.  He finished off the month by making LM in Santa Clara, and still  leads the master point race for 2007.  George Eftemon was the top 99er for August, followed by Judy Malone and John and Peggy Oakshott.  George still leads for 2007.
The Club Manager's Newsletter reminds us that behavior at club games is solely the responsibility of the club
manager.   In most cases in the Fresno Unit, that means the director.  Complaints should go to the director.  Complaints at club games may go to the Fresno Unit only for Wednesday night games, Sunday afternoon games, beginning lessons sponsored by the unit, Unit Championship games, and district or ACBL games such as STAC games or NAP games.
Maggie had a great time at her 77th birthday party - she thanks everyone who made it so much fun.

BOARD NOMINATIONS
Anita Penny has checked with some members who may be interested in running for the Unit 522 Board of Directors.  If you are interested, please let her know or contact any member of the board.  We'll have a nomination box at the bridge club soon.  Nominations close when we mail the December Aces Places and Faces sometime before Thanksgiving.
PLACES AND FACES
Last month we had a letter from Mary Peterson, a former member who moved to Santa Cruz, inviting us to dinner on Saturday October 13 during the Santa Cruz sectional.  There are sign up sheets at the bridge club - sign up if you wish to play at the sectional and enjoy a nice dinner with your friends.
At the Santa Clara Regional, Bob Endara and Carolyn Lofton were fifth in B Senior pairs.  Farid Assemi and Jim Tritt were second in KO teams and fourteenth in the All Western Pairs.  Bert Rettner won the bracket 2 KO team and won the bracket 2 KO teams with Dave Shuster, Mark Stern, and Bill Glass.   Mun Takeda was third in Bracket 2 KO teams and sixth in the side game.  Dora Gostanian and Mary Jo Davila won the  Bracket 2 KO consolation.   Richard Meffley was 29th in the All Western Pairs.  Jay Roll and Gerard Laquerriere won the Open Pairs.
At the Irvine Regional, Pat Simpson and Howard Reed won the Bracket 4 KO teams twice and were first and third in B in the side game.
Best wished to Judy Ataide on her recent marriage to Bob Walker.  They are on a cruise to Newfoundland.
Seems we've had a lot of "replacements" lately - Carol Miller, hip, Judy Malone, knee, Barbara Kelly, knee.   It's hard to replace them at the bridge table.  We've seen Carol back at the bridge table already.  Kim Morris just had shoulder surgery and is doing well.
Goodbye to Hugh Miller, who is moving to Idaho.  We hope he is close to a bridge club.
Welcome to new members Karin Blanchard, Steve Blumberg, Janet Ellish, Mary and Nick Gullo,  Judy Geary, Karen Laws, Mary Lou Pease, and Carol Willoughby.

COMING SOON!
It's only a short time until our Unit Christmas Party.  We'll have two Sunday Unit Championship games in a row - the first Sunday and the second Sunday.   The Unit Christmas party  is moved to December 9 so that those who want to play the last day of the national tournament in San Francisco won't miss the party.
The San Francisco North American Bridge Championships are coming November 22 through December 2.  Jill Wood and many members of District 21 have worked hard for years to make this tournament work.   NABC championships have regional, national, and novice/intermediate games for everyone.  There will be pair games, team games, Knockouts, Swisses, lessons and entertainment going on morning noon and night.   We've been asked to volunteer a few people for an hour or two.  If you can help out there, that will be appreciated.  You won't be sorry if you attend the tournament.
The Unit North American Pairs finals is Sunday November 11.  Those who qualified at a club in June, July, or August may play.  The District 21 finals are in Burlingame on January 19 through 21.  Flights B and C play one day, Flight A plays two days.
