MORE BEGINNING LESSONS
STARTING IN OCTOBER

We will again be offering lessons for beginning bridge players.  Frequent beginning lessons is one of the ways that bridge clubs thrive - new bridge players means new members and eventually more players in all the games.   We encourage all members to help by spreading the word of the new lessons.   We will have a series on Tuesday nights at 7 pm starting October 9, 2007 and a series on Friday mornings at 9 am starting October 12, 2007.  The first two lessons are free.  We have lots of flyers at the Fresno Bridge Club.  Please take a few to give to friends who may be interested in learning bridge or to post where people may read them.   Mun Takeda and Dora Gostanian will be leading the lessons.  A simplified version of the flyer is available on the unit website.

Al CRANE AND BLAKE FUESSENICH
TOP 299er SECTIONAL

Attendance at the 299er Sectional was up from 2006, but still below attendance marks in 2004 and 2005.   We never had enough 49er players to hold a separate section.  Thanks go to Dora Gostanian and Mary Jo Davila, who provided outstanding hospitality including lunch on Saturday and Sunday.  Players raved about the lunches.   Thanks also to Byron Steinert and Skip Miller, who once again provided the "Learn" in the Lunch and Learn between sessions each day.  Thanks also to Mike Molinari, who was top assistant every session, with directing, hospitality, and helping his students enjoy the tournament, and to Mun Takeda, partnership chairman.
Top master point winners at the tournament were Al Crane and Blake Fuessenich.  Congratulations!

SURF'S UP SANTA CRUZ OPEN SECTIONAL
October 13-14 Dinner Invitation

Here's a message from Mary Peterson, who first learned duplicate at the Fresno Bridge Club in Maggie's and Ginny's games.  Several years ago, Mary moved to Santa Cruz and has continued her duplicate bridge at the Santa Cruz Bridge Center.  She now serves on the SCBC Board of Directors:

Hello to all my Fresno friends!  The players of the Santa Cruz Bridge Center welcome all Fresno players to District 21.  As you know, Santa Cruz is also in District 21 and we look forward to many years of challenging competition with our Fresno friends.
On the weekend of October 13-14, the Santa Cruz Bridge Center will host an open sectional tournament, which we have named the "Surf's Up"Sectional.  We hope that you will plan to attend our sectional and enjoy a high level of competition in a beautiful part of our state.  You can find lots of information about the tournament schedule and suggestions for accommodations by visiting our website. (Go to bottom of homepage, click on "Quick Links/Surf's Up Sectional.)
If you and your partner decide to play in our "Surf's Up" Sectional, I would like to extend a personal invitation to you to come to my home for dinner on Saturday, October 13.  No need to pay or to bring anything.  All I ask is that you kindly sign-up on the sign-up sheet which will be posted at the Club beginning September 6.    Space will be limited, so be sure and sign up early.
I look forward to seeing you at the Surf's Up Sectional tournament and to renewing our acquaintance over dinner.  If you have any questions, feel free to call me at (831) 423-3365 or e-mail me at maryrpeterson@hotmail.com.

COMING SOON
The Fall Sectional is coming November 1-4.  It's not too early to make plans.   Those who qualified for the North American Pairs at the club in June, July, or August, may play in the unit finals on Sunday November 11.   All of October is club appreciation month - with many club appreciation games paying lots of master points.  Club appreciation Swiss teams also give a bit of gold points to those who win matches.
The Fresno Unit will hold elections for unit board members in December.  If you wish to  be nominated, please let a unit board member know.
