6th ANNUAL 299er SECTIONAL
 AUGUST 11-12

Once again we are holding a sectional just for players with under 300 master points.  We'll have hand records, prizes, lots of refreshments, and plenty of fun.
As always, there will be free lunch and learn sessions between sessions both days.   Yes, sometimes you can get a free lunch, with a free lesson too.   We will have stratified pairs Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10 am, and at 2:30 on Saturday.   We'll have 49er pairs on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, and a newcomer game on Saturday morning for those with up to 5 master points.   Sunday afternoon at 2:30 is a Swiss team.   Get your partners and teammates ready, there are plenty of silver points to be won.
Please contact partnership chairman Mun Takeda at 559-284-3750 if you need a partner.

NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS
 QUALIFYING CONTINUES

There are still several chances to qualify for the North American Pairs at club games.   Check your calendar for the dates and times of the qualifying games.   All of the qualifying games pay half red points, sectionally rated.   Those who qualify in June, July, or August may play in the unit finals on Sunday, November 11 at 1 pm.   About half the players in each flight qualify for the next round.  Those who qualify in Flight A (open) may play in the District 21 finals in Burlingame January 20 and 21, 2008.  Those who qualify in Flight B (under 2000 master points) may play in Burlingame on January 19.  Those who qualify in Flight C (nonLM and under 500 master points) may play in Burlingame on January 21.  Those who are eligible for more than one flight may play in more than one D21 finals.   The top three pairs in each flight are eligible to go to the national finals in Detroit, Michigan in March, 2008.

STAC SWISS TEAMS
Clubs may hold sectionally rated Swiss team games the week of August 20 to 26.   The Fresno unit will hold a Sectional Tournament at Clubs Swiss team game on Sunday, August 26.   Points won at the STAC Swiss team are all silver points.

PRO-AM SWISS TEAMS
We had a fun team game on July 15, with seven teams playing six matches.   Each player  played two matches with the other three team members as partners.   We tried out a lot of new partnerships.   The top seven Life Masters were team captains, and the rest of the players were drawn as teammates.  The pot luck lunch before the game was a great starter.   Next time we'll try a little bit different method of drawing teams.

PLACES AND FACES
At the North American Bridge Championships in Nashville, Farid Assemi, Jim Tritt and Ed Wojewoda were second in the knockout teams, 17th in the Spingold Knockout teams, and 18th in the NABC Swiss Teams.  Richard Meffley was 25th in the Wehrner Open Pairs, 13th in the NABC Fast Pairs, and second in compact knockout teams.  Rose Boot was second in flight X in board-a-match teams.      The Nashville tournament was well attended, and as usual had events for everyone from beginner to world champion every day.   Lots of players enjoyed the food and entertainment every night, which included dancing to a different kind of live band every night, from Dixieland to rock to Big Band and more.
Welcome to new members Kirk Stewart and Mike Rouch .

  A HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Seventy years ago on July seventh, little Maggie had her seventh birthday.   Her mother gave her seven dollars and she felt like the richest girl in the world.    This year, on July seventh (07/07/07) Maggie Mahaffey turned 77.   The bridge players celebrated her birthday - people were singing to her and feeding her with cake and other delights.   They gave her seven birthday cards and seven balloons (well actually, more) and saved table seven for her.  She played her heart out.   She got 7 boards with 7 match points (actually 2 were 7½ and 2 were 6 ½).   And she won (actually tied for first)!!  She was in seventh heaven!
