MARGIE KENYON!
JUDY DODD!
JIM STEFANICH!
NEW LIFE MASTERS!

At the June Las Vegas regional, Margie Kenyon and Judy Dodd made Life Master.  Margie went over with a second place finish in the compact knockout teams with Bill Glass.  Jim made LM several months ago at the Santa Clara regional, but somehow we didn't announce the good news here.   Congratulations to all three!

PRO-AM ROUNDABOUT SWISS TEAMS
JULY 15

We had so much fun at the pro-am Swiss teams a few months ago that we will try it again with a twist.   No, we won't eliminate the pot luck before the game.   The new rule this time is that each member of the team MUST play with all the other members of the team.  So everyone on the team gets to meet and play with each other.   All team members get a chance to play with the team captain.   Some of the teams have already done that in our previous pro-am teams, and other teams have just picked one lineup and stayed with it.   Let's see if this experiment is more fun!   The pot luck is at 12:15, with bridge starting as close to 1 pm as we can get.  Please sign up and come early so we can start early.

UNIT NEWS
The new owner of the bridge club's building has offered to continue a three year lease with an option to renew for an additional five years, with an immediate increase in the monthly rent.  We are still negotiating the terms of the lease, since the lease currently in effect does not call for an increase until the end of each year.

Draft minutes of unit board meetings will be posted at the clubhouse and will be available on the unit website.

CLUB NEWS
Top winners in June in Oakhurst were Karen McCartin, Claire Molnar, Don McCartin, Fred and  Joan Nickerson, and Paul Mertens.   Top winners in Madera in May were Morgan Johnson and Denny Green, followed by Everett Bondeson, Bob Mortimer, and Dan Cartago.
There are more North American Pairs games scheduled for July and August.  Please check your calendar for the qualifying games.   Those who qualify may play later in the Fresno unit finals.   Unit qualifiers may play in the District 21 finals.  District 21 will have three flights in the Bay Area in January.   The top three in each flight may play in the national finals in Detroit in March, 2008.
Maggie is having a 4th of July "Hot Dog" luncheon party at 12:15.  This is open to all players - there will be a separate section for 0-750 players if  enough tables want to play.  Come and have a "bang-up" day in our cool clubhouse.
The last of the Sunday series games is July 22 - last chance to get in on the fun.
Wow!  We had a great turnout for the annual Graduation party pot luck and Pro-Am pairs game - 12 tables played, one of the best Sunday attendance in many months.   Maybe we should have pro-am games more often - or maybe it's the pot luck!   Everyone was good to their partners, and we heard lots of comments about what a good time the players had.

Top winner for May at the Fresno Bridge Club was Verlee O'Neill, followed by Steve Sharp.  Steve Sharp took over the lead for 2007.   Linda Coppersmith was the top 99er for May.  George Efthemon is still the leader for 2007.
August 20-26 is the week for silver point Swiss team STAC games.  If you like Swiss teams, ask your club to hold the game.

PLACES AND FACES
Back from Italy, Paula Baraldi of Madera recommends northern Italian food, but not the food in southern Italy.  A trip to Greece gets you food to die for.
At the Hollister sectional Curt Reeves and Robby Rouch were fifth and sixth in open pairs.   Richard Meffley was fourth in the Swiss teams, with Gerard Laquerriere and Jay Roll fifth in the Swiss teams and third in the open pairs.
At the Sacramento regional, Pat Simpson, Suzanne Graham, Judy Nicholson, and Dora Gostanian were fourth in flight C in the evening Swiss teams.   Jim Stefanich won the bracket 3 knockout teams and was second in flight B of the evening Swiss.  Rose Boot was second in bracket 2 KO teams.   Jill Wood was seventh in the open pairs.  Mun Takeda and Allyson Farrell won flight B of the Swiss teams and were third in flight C of the evening Swiss teams.  John and Tina Renna won the 299er pairs.  Jim Tritt, Farid Assemi, and Ed Wojewoda were third in the knockout teams and fifteenth in the California Capital Swiss teams.    Dave Shuster, Jay Roll, Mark Stern, and Gerard Laquerriere were sixth in the California Capital Swiss, with Richard Meffley tenth.
In Las Vegas, Rose Boot was fourth and sixth in the side game, and third in flight B side game.  Judy Zimmerer was fourth twice and  fifth twice in flight B of the 299er pairs and second in flight A. Denny Tweed and Catherine Burden were second in flight C of the 49er pairs.  Mike Molinari, Paul Boyd, and Rick and Vivian Betcher were fifth in the bracket 7 KO teams and first  in bracket 5 compact KO consolation and second in the bracket 3 consolation.  Bill Glass and Margie Kenyon were second in bracket 4 compact KO teams.  Glenn Ford and Al Crane were fifth in Flight C of the evening Swiss teams and third with Bobbie Schlagel in the bracket 8 KO teams.
Our condolences go the Lee Donohue, whose husband Don recently passed away.  Don was a retired professor of mathematics at CSUF, and one of the top players at the Fresno bridge club, a gold Life Master.  He has seldom played at the club in the last few years, playing more on the Internet.   Few could describe the play of a bridge hand at the club in such an accurate and amusing way.   We miss him.
Our condolences go to the family and friends of Shirley Bowler Schneider, a long time member of the Fresno bridge club, who passed away in the last week.

There was a nice story about the Fresno Bridge Club in the
FRESNO BEE.   Read about it here.    We've saved the file in case the Bee takes it down.
