MEMORIAL GAME MAY 6 Come to the pot luck lunch at 12:15 before the Unit Championship game on May 6. The game is named in honor of Peggy Ochs, who directed her games at the bridge club from the 1960's until the early 1980's when she passed away. She taught bridge to many player at Weinstock's department store, many of whom are still playing. Before the game, we remember all our members who passed away in the last year. UNIT NEWS Bill Wood and Richard Meffley are now representing Fresno on the District 21 board. The board meets three times per year, at the District 21 regionals. The computer at the bridge club has the ACBL's convention card program, which is also available on the ACBL's website. We may be able to load player's convention cards onto the computer so that they will always be available for you. Players may get the program from the ACBL website, and fill out their own convention card at home. Those who wish to also load their card onto the bridge club computer may put the program on a disk or CD and bring to the bridge club, or e-mail to fresnobridgeclub@sbcglobal.net and/or to bridgefresno@hotmail.com. Please name the file so that it can be easily recognized. We may be able to copy player's cards into the computer, but it takes some time to do it for you. We may also keep file folders for our members to store their printed convention cards in a file cabinet at the bridge club. When we get another file cabinet, players can store convention cards with their various partners in a file cabinet at the bridge club so that their convention cards will always be available for them. Don Mahaffey collected recyclable cans and turned them in for the bridge club's treasury. If anyone would like to volunteer to store and take the cans to be recycled, please let us know. Unfortunately this is a very low paying job, but it does include a Christmas dinner. The unit board reminds us that the parking lot gate should be locked during play. If the director is unable to lock the gate, one of the players can do it. The Fresno Unit is responsible for actions at sectionals and during the games it runs on Wednesday night and Sunday afternoon. The unit has also taken on the responsibility of maintaining the bridge club facility. All other games at the Fresno Bridge Club are owned by the directors who run the game. The directors are responsible for the activities that occur at their game. If there are problems at club games, they should be brought to the attention of the club owner, who usually is the director. Please do not contact unit board members about situations that occur at club games until after you have talked to the club owner, unless it involves maintaining the bridge club or the games that the unit runs. Draft minutes of unit board meetings will be posted at the clubhouse and will be available on the unit website. CLUB NEWS May is Sectional Tournament at Clubs month. All Fresno and Madera club games except Tuesday morning are holding STAC games from Monday May 7 to Saturday May 12. These games are sectional tournament games which give silver points to the winners, and a chance to win a lot more points. The same hands are played at hundreds of tables throughout the western states. The top scores each session could win about twenty master points. Be sure to play! Top winners for April from Oakhurst were Al Crane, Betty Ann Dunn, Joni Roberts and Wally Cucura. Top Madera master point winner for March was Richard Meffley, followed by Betty Eden, Dan Cartago, Morgan Johnson and Denny Green. Everett Bondeson leads for 2007, with Bob Mortimer and Denny Green right behind. The Saturday game will now have Charity games twice a month. Charity games award master points at the same rate as sectional tournaments. One charity game each month will give donations to the ACBL Charity Foundation and one game will give to local hospice. Top winner for March at the Fresno Bridge Club was Steve Sharp, followed by Bert Rettner. Wanda Cardella still leads for 2007. George Efthemon was the top 99er, both for March and for 2007. |

Play is divided into two groups: experienced duplicate players and newcomers. For those who have some previous experience it is not too late to join. Just come to the bridge club before 9 am on Wednesday. Several of our members are helping Mike with the bridge game after the lesson. If you'd like to help, contact Mike Molinari at 559-658-7318. PLACES AND FACES During the Sacramento Regional, all of the Fresno folks in attendance are invited to Mark Stern's house for dinner between the afternoon and evening sessions (about 5 pm) on Saturday, June 2. The address is 141 Rockmont Circle, Sacramento, 95835. Anyone planning on attending should RSVP to Mark's e-mail address (mark-stern@msn.com) so Mark and his wife can get an idea of how much food to prepare. Mark will prepare a map with directions and e-mail it to those who need it. For anyone without e-mail, contact the AP&F editor, or ask a director to send an e-mail from the bridge club. At the San Diego regional, John and Della Schnell were second in the open pairs. ACE OF CLUBS MINI-McKENNEY WINNERS We gave out MiniMcKenney awards and Ace of Clubs certificates to the winners during the recent Pro-Am Swiss team game. MiniMckenney awards go to the top master point winners of the year. Ace of Clubs awards go to the top winners at club games only. MEMORIAL FUND Thanks go to Kimi Mochizuki, who made a contribution in memory of Jess McCoy, and to Mary Lou Da Costa, who made contributions in memory of Trudy Andrews, Jess McCoy, and Don Mahaffey. We are pleased to accept any contributions to the Memorial Fund in memory of our friends. The Memorial Fund is used mainly to improve the bridge club facility. PRO AM PAIRS Next month we'll have our annual graduation party and Pro-Am pairs. We'll honor all our new Life Masters (they even get to play free) and draw for partners - Life Masters will be partners of players who are still trying to become LM's. Come join us for a fun afternoon on Sunday, June 10. PRO AM SWISS TEAMS Last month's Pro-Am Swiss Team was well attended. We held a drawing to determine the players on each of eleven teams. The team of Byron Steinert, Rose Boot, Steve Sharp, and Ina Yssels went undefeated to come in first. |
