| NEW LIFE MASTERS! PAUL BOYD, OPAL PURVES MAKE LM AT THE FRESNO BRIDGE CLUB Paul Boyd made LM during the Fresno Unit's annual Christmas party. Opal Purves got her silver points during the sectional tournament at clubs at the Fresno bridge club. She played several times during the week, getting her last silver points on Friday. We're sorry to hear she's moving back to Santa Rosa. Congratulations to our newest Life Masters! UNIT ELECTION NEWS Welcome to newly board members Dora Gostanian, John Oakshott, Anita Penny, and Bert Rettner, and re-elected member Dave Shuster. The first board meeting of 2007 will be Sunday, January 14 after the Sunday unit game. Officers will be elected at the meeting. Joyce Stone of the ACBL club and member services has informed us that our election concerning changing districts does not meet their standards, although they never told us their standards until after the election was held. The vote was 77-4 in favor of changing to District 21, the Bay Area district. They require that every ballot be verified as voted by a member of the Fresno Unit, and that no member voted more than once. They informed us that the normal procedure is to have a petition signed by half the members of the unit. Petitions will be available at all the bridge clubs in the unit early in January. Members should sign a petition only once if they are in favor of changing districts. For those members who will not be visiting a bridge club in the Fresno unit, the petition can be printed from the website and mailed to Fresno Unit ACBL, 2415 E. Clinton, Fresno CA 93703. |
UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links California and nearby tournaments Bay Area TournamentsAll tournaments PLACES and FACES At the North American Bridge Championships in Honolulu, Jim Tritt was 18th in the North American Swiss Teams and 35th in the Life Master Pairs. In the Senior Knockout Teams, his team had a heartbreaking loss in the finals - his team led all the way until tied on the 63rd board, and lost on the last board - finishing second. Rose Boot was second in board-a-match teams, and second in Flight B in the open pairs. Ginny Dow and Laura NeVille had a section top in the open pairs. Ed Wojewoda and Farid Assemi were 19th in the Board-a-Match teams and sixth in the North American Swiss teams. Glen Ford and Al Crane were third in bracket 7 of the KO teams at the Palm Springs regional, as well as sixth in flight C in the afternoon Swiss teams and fourth in flight C in the side game. Jay Roll and Gerard Laquerriere were third in the side game. Jim Tritt and Richard Meffley were third in the District 22 NAP finals - which qualified them for the national finals in St. Louis. Congratulations to all our winners! Get well wishes go to tournament director Betty Bratcher, director-in-charge of many regionals in California, and all the STAC games. She will be missing tournaments for awhile as she recovers from surgery. Our condolences to the friends of Faye Braswell, a Life Master and member of the Fresno Unit for over forty years who passed away early in December at the age of 96. She played frequently at the club until her health didn't allow playing. We'll miss her. Welcome to new member Jane Willson of Madera. From Richard Pavlicek's website: Did you hear about the lady who always went down one in 3 NT? When asked about this she said she was just following her teacher's advice: "Eight ever, Nine never." |

CLUB NEWS Thanks to the unit and the club owners for hosting Christmas parties - they helped make the bridge clubs that much more enjoyable last month. Several of the clubs are holding Charity games this month. Be sure to attend, win extra master points, and help some charitable organizations. Grand National Swiss team qualifying games have been going on since September, but we have not held any yet. The first is scheduled for Sunday January 21 at 1 pm. Most players win some red points, and the overall awards are all sectionally rated - the same as a sectional tournament. Get your team together for this fun event. The conditions of contest now allow either victory point scoring or win-loss, so we will try win-loss this time. Top Madera winner for November was Denny Green, followed closely by Ruth Rowe and Pearl McGinnis, and Everett Bondeson. Denny increased his lead for 2006 over Everett Bondeson and Bob Mortimer. November point winners at the Fresno Bridge Club are Steve Sharp, followed by Wanda Cardella and Gerard Laquerriere. Bill Frampton and John Peckler were the top 99ers. Wants Cardella and Roberta Beam remain 2006 leaders for open and 99er races. Top Oakhurst winners for December are Burke Zane, Mary-Gene Kreighoff, Claire Molnar, Everett Bondeson, and Jim Honeywell. Our players did quite well in the December Sectional Tournament at Clubs. Top winners were Bert Rettner and Monique Irion, who won 12.92 masterpoints on Monday afternoon for third overall. We'll have another series game on Sunday, starting January 14, 2007. The series will consist of the next six games on Sunday, exclusive of championships or other special events. Those with the top scores will win additional master points. Click on game recaps to view results of Fresno and Madera club games. Most games are posted. |
