SECTIONAL OCTOBER 26-29 Gerard Laquerriere wins President Award Al Crane Top 99er This fall's tournament was ably directed by Scott Campbell from southern California. This was his first chance to direct our tournament, and he did a top-notch job. Attendance was much improved from the last three fall sectionals, with Saturday and Sunday attendance the best in three years. We enjoyed the refreshments provided by our members and hospitality cochairmen Dora Gostanian and Judy Nicholson. Thanks to Richard Betcher, the tournament chairmen who coordinated efforts, and to all others who helped. The top master point winner was Gerard Laquerriere, who won one event, finished second in two events, and third in three events to win over twenty master points. Two of his partners, Jay Roll and Dave Shuster were next, with over fifteen points. The only double winners were John and Della Schnell, Jim Slinger and Susan Bertken, who each won a pair event and combined to win the Swiss teams. In the 299er events, Jean Hoffman, Betty Smith, Olivia Stockton, and Bev Daniels each won a pair game and a Swiss team game. The top 99er player was Al Crane of Coarsegold. Congratulations! UNIT NEWS We now have hi speed Internet access at the bridge club - DSL was installed at the bridge club just before the sectional. With Internet access on the same computer as we use for scoring, we can post the results to the unit website within minutes after the scores are complete. Hopefully more of the club directors can do that starting in November. We will have elections with the next newsletter. It is not too late to nominate yourself or another member Judy Nicholson, nominating committee chairman, has found some members willing to run for the office for 2007 and 2008, but there is room for more on the ballot. The ballot will also have a vote to determine whether we stay in District 22 or request a change to District 21. |
UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links California and nearby tournaments Bay Area TournamentsAll tournaments NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS The Fresno Unit qualifying for the North American Pairs will be held Sunday November 12 at 1 pm. Those who qualified in June, July, or August at any club game may play with any other player who is qualified. Players received qualifications for flights A, B, and/or C, which is open, under 2,000 master points, and nonLife Master, under 500 master points. The game is stratified, but the District 22 finals in Palm Springs on Saturday, December 16 will have three separate flights. Those who qualify here are eligible to play during the Palm Springs regional in December. The top three in Palm Springs in each flight qualify for the finals in St. Louis next year. The ACBL pays part of the expenses for the top two pairs in each flight. A list of those who qualified at the Fresno Bridge Club will be posted there. PLACES and FACES Curt Reeves and Robert Rouch were third and fourth in the Sonora sectional open pairs. Suzanne Graham and Bev Daniels were second in flight C. Dee Beebe was a big winner at the Big Fresno Fair - winning several awards for her beautiful quilts in both Fine Arts and Homemaking divisions. |
| DISTRICT 21/DISTRICT 22 Fresno has been a part of District 22 since districts were first formed. District 22 originally included Monterey, Hollister, Merced-Turlock, Modesto, and Santa Cruz, but all have moved north to District 21 because they are closer to the events there. District 21 includes those units, the Bay Area, Santa Rosa, Stockton, and Sacramento. The rest of northern California is in District 20, which includes Hawaii, Oregon, and northern Nevada. We will soon be voting on whether we should move from District 22 to District 21. Both districts belong to the Western Conference, which publishes the Forum, a newspaper which comes in the mail monthly. Most of the tournament information is the same in each edition. Sectional ads, the front page, and unit columns are different in each edition. Each district runs North American Pair games and Grand National Team games. District 22 now holds the NAP finals on one day at the Palm Springs regional in December. Previously they have been held in January at a bridge club or during the January regional. District 21 currently holds NAP finals at Pleasant Hill Bridge Club on various dates for the different flights. Flight A is a four session event; flights B and C are two sessions. Both districts require club qualifying and unit qualifying. Next month we'll look at regionals, GNT and politics in each district, and, if anyone has questions, we'll try to answer them. |
CLUB NEWS Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, there will be no games on Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Day, or Friday night after Thanksgiving. Wednesday and Friday afternoon games will be held as usual. There's a great article on page 45 of the November Bulletin by a young man who learned bridge from his grandfather. Too bad more of us aren't teaching our grandchildren to play bridge. He stated that he put out the "smile card" when his opponents were arguing, to stop the argument. We used to have "smile cards" in all the bidding boxes. Whenever anyone at the table is saying things they shouldn't say, look in your bidding box and pull out the smile card. Top winners for the month in Oakhurst were Claire Molnar, Paul Mertens, Karen McCartin, Wally Cucura, and Mary-Gene Krieghoff. Steve Sharp was the top master point winner for September, followed by Anita Penny and Wanda Cardella. Roberta Beam again was the top 99er, followed by Al Crane. Top master point winner for September at the Fresno Bridge Club was Steve Sharp, followed by Anita Penny and Wanda Cardella. Wanda Cardella holds her lead for 2006, trailed by Steve Sharp and Anita Penny. Roberta Beam was the top 99er master point winner again for September, followed by Al Crane. For players with under 100 master points, Roberta Beam still leads for 2006. Wednesday 299er series winners were Ron Licata and Sharon Peterson. Patrick Carroll and John McGregor were tied for third and fourth. Roberta Beam was fifth, with Al Crane sixth. Open series winner was Hugh Miller, followed by D Zody, Skip Miller, Sandy Zovod, Byron Steinert, and Barbara Thacker. |
