FALL
SECTIONAL OCTOBER 26-29 Our annual fall sectional is this month. Please check flyers and the unit calendar for the times and events for the games. We will have separate open and 299er sections every session except Saturday afternoon (which will have a 199er section) and Sunday which will have open Swiss teams and flight B, under 1500 master point Swiss teams. For that event, hospitality Chairmen Judy Nicholson and Dora Gostanian are providing a free lunch in between sessions for all players. What could be better? If you need a partner for any session, Mun Takeda is here to help. ROSTER We're preparing and updating information so that we can publish a new roster. There is a list of members on the west clubhouse wall. Please take a moment to be sure that your name, address, and phone number are correct. If somehow we have your cell phone listed and you want your home phone listed instead, please make the correction. |
UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links California and nearby tournaments Bay Area TournamentsAll tournaments UNIT NEWS A big thank you to all the Life Masters and the "Bidders:" in the charity auction. We raised $545 to be donated to the Marjaree Mason Center on behalf of the Fresno Unit. It's not too soon to nominate someone for the unit board of directors for the 2007-2008 term. Contact Judy Nicholson or put a name in the nomination box at the club to nominate a member, even yourself. The ballot for the election will be mailed with the December issue of Aces Places and Faces - voting will close during the Annual meeting December 3, 2006. The ballot will include a vote on the proposition of changing our unit affiliation from District 22 to 21. This is an important issue that we have discussed in past issues of this newsletter. District 21 includes Sacramento, the Bay Area, and parts of California south of the Bay Area to Fresno and Madera county, including Monterey. District 22 includes all of California south of District 21, except Los Angeles county, which is District 23. Districts review sectional dates to avoid conflicts, conduct regionals, hold North American Pairs and Grand National Team contests, and serve as appellate bodies for issues arising in the units. The Building committee reports that with rising real estate prices, we are not close to the amount of money in the building fund needed to purchase a new building. However, there are now many affordable rental properties that would be an improvement on the present location. Howard Reed is chairing a committee to review options to move. If you would like to help, please call him. Draft minutes of unit board meetings will be posted at the clubhouse and will be available on the unit website. |

CLUB NEWS Mark Stern has been a Fresno Unit member for over 30 years, but soon he is moving to Sacramento. He has been a unit board member, sectional tournament chairmen, and done many other duties for the unit, including working on a new unit roster. We will have a bon voyage party for him on Wednesday evening, October 18 at the 7 pm game. We'll even have a unit championship game that night. Come wish him well. October is Club Appreciation month. Every club will be holding championship games in appreciation for all the players who come to their games every week. There are no extra sanction fees for this game, so check your calendar and come play. Clubs may also hold Club Appreciation Swiss team games, which include a small amount of gold points to everyone who places. The Saturday club will have a Swiss team game on October 21. From time to time we need to remind players of some of the things to do to make the game more pleasant. One important thing is to say hello to your opponents before you start play - if they are strangers, you might even introduce self. A few more: Arrive on time! The director often can't start the game until he knows how many people are playing, and he can't know for sure if you aren't there at game time. The boards on the table at the start may be different if an extra pair is added. It's much easier to get it right the first time. Park your car in a parking space - don't make your own space. Granted, it would be easier if we repainted the lines more often, but there's no reason why cars should be parked that block other cars. When you're Dummy, follow the rules. Do NOT help declarer by playing the cards before he calls them - Dummy is a spectator, not a player. Dummy is generally not allowed to call attention to irregularities, and must not call the director unless someone else has pointed out an irregularity. Dummy may point out irregularities and call the director after play is completed. If you have more reminders for our players, please let us know and we'll publish them. We have new equipment at the bridge club. After over a month without printer access, and computer problems as well, the Unit purchased a new computer, which is now up and running. A big thank you to Kay Chrisman for many hours of shopping, installing, and doing all the things to get it going. Also thanks to Mike Molinari, who got a new printer for the club. Although the old printer still works, we have had multiple problems trying to get it to connect to our computers. It seems that the bridge club is getting messier and messier. We are considering having additional janitorial service. This will cost more, but it may be worth it. We can all help by bringing our trash to the waste baskets in the kitchen. Please throw unused food away in the kitchen rather than in the waste baskets around the room. It is always a help to the directors if you bring bridge supplies - boards, pencils, table markers to the front of the room at the end of the game. Top master point winner for August at the Fresno Bridge Club was Anita Penny, followed by Wanda Cardella and Margaret Siebert. Wanda Cardella holds her lead for 2006, trailed by Steve Sharp and Anita Penny. Roberta Beam was the top 99er master point winners for August . For players with under 100 master points, Roberta Beam is now the leader for 2006. Somehow we published the June yearly totals in the mailed AP&F. Winners of the unit series games are for Flight A, David Shuster, John Schnell, and Jean Kesler. Flight B winners are Mark Stern, Della Schnell, and Hugh Miller. Flight C winners are Sandy Zovod, Mary Jo Howard and Judy Nicholson. Those who won in more than one flight only get to win one prize. <> Leaders for September in Oakhurst are Don McCartin, Wally Cucura, Everett Bondeson, Jim Honeywell, and Paul Mertens Top Madera masterpoint winners for August were Denny Green, followed by Morgan Johnson and Ruth Rowe. Top winners for September were Larry and Gay Slates. Oakhurst Club Appreciation games are October 16 and 19 - we left them out of the printed newsletter. |
