299er SECTIONAL AUGUST 12-13
It's the fifth annual Fresno 299er Sectional.  Only players with under 300 points are eligible to play.   We've had a lot of fun in the last four years   We'll have free lunch and learn bridge lessons between sessions.  We'll have prizes for the winners.   We'll have 299er games and 49er games and Swiss Teams Sunday afternoon.  Dora Gostanian and Judy Nicholson will have plenty of snacks for the players.  They've asked our members who want to help out with hospitality to bring desserts on Saturday and Sunday.

DISTRICT 22 CHARITY GAME
Sunday August 20 is the Districtwide Charity game.  We'll have hand records and analyses for all who participate.  There will be a luncheon at 12:15 followed by the charity championship at 1 pm.
To raise money for charity, several Life masters have agreed to be auctioned off as a partner for a bridge game to be played later.  We will have a board with envelopes to place your bid, starting August 7th.  You may check and see if you've been outbid so you can raise your bid.  Bidding closes at 1 pm August 20.  We hope to see lots of you join us at the party!

Draft minutes of unit board meetings will be posted at the clubhouse and will be available on the unit website.

PASSED OUT
When is it legal to redeal after a hand is passed out?    It's legal when you are playing rubber bridge.   It may be legal when you are playing party bridge.   When we  are playing duplicate bridge, we must follow Law 22A:   "After the auction period has ended,  if no player has bid, the hands are returned to the board without play. There shall not be a redeal."  Don't ask the director if you can redeal; the director will tell you "NO."   Do you think you're not getting your money's worth when you get to pass but not play?  Tell that to dummy, he doesn't get to play either.   Tell that to the top 21 teams in the Spingold Knockout Teams in Chicago.  They got a bye the first round, but they still had to play $144 per team.  If you redeal in a tournament, the hand records won't match the
hands.  So what makes you think you can redeal just because you're playing at the club?

PLACES  AND FACES
At the Chicago North American Bridge Championships, Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda were fifth in the Spingold KO teams,  eighth in the Open Swiss Teams, and second in the KO teams.  Jim Tritt was 15th in the Open Swiss Teams, second and  fifth in the Swiss teams and third in the KO teams.  Richard Meffley was 30th in the Werner Open Pairs.  Blake Rundquist was 44th in the Open Fast Pairs.  Shirley Blum and Steve McConnell were 25th in the Mixed Board-A-Match teams, and 22nd with Blake Rundquist and Richard Meffley in the Open Swiss Teams.
Chicago is a great town to have the national tournament.  Some of the players got a chance to see the White Sox or the Cubs play baseball, see some great museums, or go to the Second City comedy club.  As usual, there were many bridge events every day for all levels of bridge players.   The next NABC tournament is in Hawaii in November.  If you ever want to go to a big bridge tournament, that could be the one to visit.
At the Palo Alto sectional, Richard Meffley was third and sixth in the Swiss teams.  At the Santa Cruz 299er Sectional,   Olivia Stockton, ; Judy Dodd, Suzanne Graham and Beverly Daniels were third in the Swiss Teams.
John and Della Schnell won the open pairs championship at the Bridge Week Regional in Long Beach.  Bill Glass was fourth in the side game.
    Congratulations to our many winners!
Jim and Lee McKoane will have their annual Shaver Lake pot luck on Saturday August 19 at noon.  Everyone is invited for food and bridge.
We are sorry to report that Joan Fuchs recently passed away.  She was a member of the Fresno Rockets softball team that is in the Fresno Hall of Fame long before she started playing bridge with us.
Our sympathy is extended to the family of Bill Hagopian who recently passed away.  He was a regular player with the Madera bridge club, and occasionally played in Fresno and Oakhurst.
Our sympathy is extended to Everett Bondeson, whose  brother recently passed away.
Condolences to Mike Molinari whose mother passed away.
Margie Kenyon has returned to Fresno after hospitalization in Sacramento.  Our wishes for continued improvement go out to her.
Mary Jo Davila wishes to thank all those who helped her after her accident.   She is now out of her wheelchair and on the way to a full recovery.   You never know how many friends you have at the bridge club until you discover them helping you get to the bridge club, to shopping, and to many other things that seem so easy when you are well.
Welcome to new member Estee Strombotne.

CLUB NEWS

After watching the Sunday game start a successful series, the Wednesday night game will have  a six week series starting August 28.   Extra master points go to the top players, counting the best four of the six sessions.   There will be a separate series for the open and 299er game.  Come play Wednesday nights and see who wins the series.
Check your calendar for more special events.  The Saturday afternoon bridge game will hold a silver point Swiss team game on August 26.  There are also North American Pairs games, the District Charity game, plus several championship games and many regular games to test your skills.
It seems that it's time to remind players again that their opponents are entitled to know your conventions, even if you don't know them.  Everyone should have a convention card filled out for the opponents to check.   For most normal situations, you should know your agreements and be able to explain them to your opponents when asked.   Some bids require alerts.  All players should know which of their bids require an alert, and be prepared to give the appropriate alert or announcement.  If there is a place on the
convention card for a bid or play, you should know how you are playing it and be able to tell the opponents if they ask.

Watch for KO teams in September.
Top master point winner for June at the Fresno Bridge Club was Vivian Betcher, followed by Barbara Thacker and Jay Roll..      Wanda Cardella holds her lead for 2006, trailed by Anita  Penny and Monique Irion.
Roberta Beam was the top 99er master point winners for June, followed by George Esthemon..  George Esthemon leads for  2006.
