| SUNDAY SERIES GAMES IN JULY The last two games of the Sunday series are July 16 and July 30. The top four scores out of the six series games determines who the winners of the series are in flights A, B, and C. Top prize in each flight is $25, with more prizes for second and third. If you haven't played in the other series games, you can still play in the game and win master points and see who wins the overall prize. We may even have another series game soon. 299er SECTIONAL AUGUST 12-13 Those with under 300 master points are eligible to play in our fifth annual 299er sectional. There will be stratified sections for 49ers and 299ers, with a free lunch and lessons to boot. Also prizes for the winners - see you there! For those who read last month's AP&F, this is a correction - we had our fact checkers in. Our first 299er sectional was in May 2002. This will be the fourth August 299er sectional. DISTRICT CHARITY GAME AUGUST 20 The District Charity game is held this year on Sunday August 20, 2006. Besides the game, analyzed hand records, and a few nice refreshments, we will also have a silent auction for bridge partners. We will ask some of our Life Masters to go on the auction block to be a partner for the high bidder. Any Life Master who wants to be part of the auction can contact Maggie Mahaffey. The silent action will start when we have enough volunteers, and end on the day of the charity game. Bid high for charity! UNIT BRACKETED KNOCKOUT TEAMS Starting September 10 will be the three session Unit Knockout team games. The second and third round are tentatively scheduled for October. We hope to have three brackets of teams - those with under 2000 total points, those with under 6,000 total points, and open. The brackets will be adjusted somewhat based on the number of teams that enter. Each bracket must have five or more teams. Get your teams together. Draft minutes of unit board meetings will be posted at the clubhouse and will be available on the unit website. |
UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links California and nearby tournaments Bay Area TournamentsWINTER SECTIONAL DISTRICT 21 and DISTRICT 22 GNT and NAP We've been writing about the differences between our current District 22, and the Bay Area District 21. District 22 currently holds its Grand National Team games on one weekend in the spring for all flights. It has been held in various locations throughout the district, but most recently was held at the Dana Harbor Bridge Club in Orange County and the last two years at the San Diego Regional during Easter Week. Players qualify at local unit or club games to play in the two day finals, which is a single elimination knockout of 32 boards or less in all flights. The final round of the Open flight is 64 boards. District 21 does not hold club qualifying games for its GNT. Each flight is held on different weekends at a bridge club or sectional in the Bay Area. The Open Flight and Flight A play 64 board matches; flights B and C play 32 board matches. The Open Flight and Flight A usually take more than one weekend to complete. Flight A players are under 5,000 master points; Flight B players are under 2000 master points, and Flight C players are nonLifemasters. District 22 for the last two years has held the North American Pairs games at either the Palm Springs regional in December or the January regional, which is held in different locations. All flights are two session events, held on the same weekend. District 21 holds its NAP games on two separate weekends in the Bay Area - one weekend for flight A and C, another for flight B. Flight A is four sessions; flights B and C are two sessions. The flights are the same as for the GNT, except that the flight A NAP is open. |

CLUB NEWS There are more North American Pairs games this month - check the calendar to see when the are scheduled. Most are stratified for flights A, B, and C. The Tuesday afternoon game on July 18 is stratified for flights B and C only. Maggie is hosting a Fourth of July party on the her Tuesday game at 1 pm. She plans to have the game stratified so that open players may play on the holiday. Check with Maggie at 299-4447. Keiko will be holding her regular invitational game on the Fourth at 9 am. We hear of problems with our players at the club games on occasion. We should remember the zero tolerance rule - BE NICE! Zero tolerance has a list of things that we like players to do, and things that we don't like players to do. We like players to be friendly and say hello to their opponents. We don't like them to give unsolicitated lessons or make rude comments. There are several other items on the list, but you get the idea. When there are problems, we must ask who is in charge. Just as when there are problems in the city of Fresno, we don't usually go to the state government in Sacramento to solve them. We solve them in Fresno. Here, we go to the club in charge. Fresno Unit has almost 400 members in Fresno and Madera counties. The Fresno Unit is in charge of the Sunday games and the Wednesday night game in Fresno. All other club games are run by club owners who are in charge of their games. The Fresno Unit can act as an appellete body if a club cannot solve its problems. The club owners have in the past agreed to abide by zero tolerance procedures. That is, they may give a scoring penalty for a first offense, a larger penalty for a second offense, and a time out for the rest of the game for a third offense. Zero tolerance makes the assumption that if someone calls the director to state that there is rudeness going on, then there almost always IS rudeness going on. If the situation warrants, a club owner can bar a player from his game. This information should be shared with other local club owners, the unit, and the ACBL. When the problem gets to the unit level, the action that the unit taken must follow the ACBL's Code of Disciplinary Regulations. If a report is brought to the unit, the recorder handles the information and usually counsels the member involved. If a charge is brought to the unit, the unit must investigate, and determine whether there is misconduct warranting discipline. If so, a committee is formed to hear evidence and determine whether a penalty should be imposed which will apply to the entire ACBL. Further appeals to the District are allowed. If there are problems at a club game, the first step is to make the director and club owner aware of the problem, so that the club owner can solve it at once. Top master point winner for May at the Fresno Bridge Club was Wanda Cardella, followed by Steve Sharp and Vivian Betcher. Wanda Cardella holds her lead for 2006, trailed by Monique Irion and Anita Penny. The top 99er master point winner for May is Pat Creede, followed by Bill Frampton. Pat Simpson still leads the 99er race for 2006, but she went over 100 points recently and out computer won't put her on the list. George Efthemon now leads the 99er list for 2006. New leader lists for June are at the Clubhouse now. The new lists will be on the first page of the Unit webpage before the Fourth of July. |
