| GEORGE STURGES MEMORIAL A memorial will be held for George Sturges at noon on Sunday June 11 at the bridge club. Refreshments will be served afterwards, with bridge playing at 1 pm. All of George's friends, which includes all of our members, are welcome. NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS North American Pairs games are held in June, July, and August. The master points are large - the same amount as at sectionals, and half red points. Those who qualify for the unit finals later in the year will have a chance to win part gold points. Check the calendar for the dates of the NAP games. FRESNO 299er SECTIONAL AUGUST 12-13 Invite your friends to the fourth annual sectional for those with under 300 master points. Unfortunately the tournament is not listed in the June issue of the Forum, but it is listed on the ACBL's website. It will be listed in the Forum next month. Draft minutes of unit board meetings will be posted at the clubhouse and will be available on the unit website. |
UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links California and nearby tournaments Bay Area TournamentsWINTER SECTIONAL DISTRICT 22 or DISTRICT 21 Some of our members have suggested changing our district affiliation from District 22 to District 23. It is likely that ACBL will approve a change if the unit wants one. We will have a few articles in the newsletter to let our members know about it. The unit board has postponed any decision until later in the year. The Fresno unit has been a part of District 22 since ACBL districts were started. When Districts started, the ACBL Board of Directors became a body with one director from each location. The District representative for many years was Syd Levey from Fresno. For all but a few years, Fresno has had a representative on the 8 or 12 member board of District 22. Past board members have been Matt Guagliardo, Bob Cross, Anita Penny, and Bob Durbrow. Four ACBL districts are in California. District 21 is mainly the bay area, extending south to Merced and Monterey and north to Sacramento. District 20 includes the rest of northern California, Oregon, Hawaii, and northern Nevada. District 23 includes Los Angeles county. The rest of California, from Fresno to San Diego, including the coast north and south of Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, San Bernardino and Palm Springs is District 22. When the districts started, Monterey, Modesto, Merced, and other nearby units were part of District 22, but they have since joined District 21. District affiliation has little effect on local bridge clubs. Districts support their bridge clubs, but they are not involved much in local activities. The main functions of districts is to run three kinds of bridge tournaments: regionals, Grand National Teams, and North American Pairs. Most districts run four regionals per year within their borders at various locations. We'll have more information about District 21 and District 22 next month. If you'd like to register your opinion, talk to any unit board member. |

CLUB NEWS The fourth of the unit's series games will be held on Sunday, June 25 at 1 pm. Come see if you can improve your standings in the series. May winners in Oakhurst are Paul Mertens, followed by Wally Cucura, Claire Molnar, Don McCartin, Karen McCartin, Clem Bingham, John Hubbard, and Burke Zane. Some of the clubs post their results on the Internet as soon as the game is over. We even send an e-mail out with the results. The results can generally be found at our recaps page, if they are posted to the Internet, even without an e-mail. Just go there and click on the date of the game. Wednesday night and Friday night are always posted to the Internet. Other games are posted occasionally. Richard Meffley will show members how to post recaps to the Internet before the Sunday game on June 18, or after any Friday night game. Directors can learn how to post the results. With the club director's permission, any player can post the results right from the bridge club. It's not complicated. There is a simple procedure for putting the results on a floppy disk, then taking it to our Internet-connected computer and using a program to post the results. We'd like to have all results on the Internet. With a few players helping, we can do it. Congratulations to Bill Glass and Norman Woo, who won the Peggy Ochs memorial game for the second year in a row. Norman has won it five times now. Bill also won the Pro-Am game with Margie Kenyon. The World Pairs game is Friday night June 2. Players from throughout the world will play the same boards and have the results all match pointed together. See if you can beat the world. Wanda Cardella is the top Fresno Bridge Club player for April, holding her lead for 2006. Deni Glenn-Boeve is the top 99er for April. Pat Simpson leads for 2006. Top master point winner for April at the Fresno Bridge Club was Monique Irion. Wanda Cardella holds her lead for 2006. Deni Glenn-Boeve top 99er master point winners for April. Pat Simpson still leads for 2006. |
