UNIT SERIES GAME CONTINUES
We've had two games of the six game Sunday series already.   There will be more games on April 23, June 25, July 16, and August 20.   Extra master points go to the top four players in the series.   Places will be determined by the best four percentage games.   There also are prizes in Flight A, open, Flight B, under 2000 master points, and Flight C, under 500 master points - $25.00, $15.00, and $10.00 in each flight.   To be eligible to win a Flight C prize, a player must have under 500 points and play at least twice with a player with under 500 points.   Otherwise, the player will be considered in Flight A or Flight B.   For Flight B prizes, players must have under 2000 master points and play with a player with under 2000 points twice.  Otherwise, the player is in Flight A.
John and Della Schnell lead the series after two games, averaging 64.51%. Dave Shuster and Mark Stern are close behind, averaging 60.87% Flight C leaders are Judy Nicholson and Mary Jo Davila, with 50.46% so far.
Thanks go to the unit board members, who provided a festive lunch for the first game of the series.

COMING UNIT EVENTS - PEGGY OCHS PARTY AND PRO-AM GRADUATION PARTY
Two of our popular annual events will be held next month.   The Peggy Ochs Memorial Game is held the first Sunday in May.   We have a pot luck lunch, and remember all of our members who have passed away in the last year.   We hold the game in honor of Peggy Ochs, who at one time directed all the afternoon games.  Many players learned to play bridge from her lessons at Weinstock's.   She was a great hostess at the Fresno Bridge Club who made it fun to be part of the club.
May 28, 2006 is the date for the annual Pro-Am graduation party.   We will honor those who have made Life Master in the last year.   So far we have three new Life Masters to honor - Vivian Betcher, Jean Moats, and Donny Graham.   We may even let them play free that day.  The graduation party is also a pro-am game.   Players do not need to bring partners - we will choose up partners at game time....or more accurately - we will draw for partners, with a "pro" and an "am" in each partnership.
Mark your calendar for these fun events.

UNIT NEWS

The unit board of directors currently meets monthly, usually the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m.   Members may attend - just contact a board member to let the board know you are coming.

We are organizing committees to increase our membership by bringing in social bridge players and teaching new players.   If you'd like to help in either area, contact your board members, including Judy Nicholson and Paul Boyd, or Education Chairman Byron Steinert.
We will hold a bracketed knockout team game later this year.   This should be a great event for all of us who like team games, with separate brackets for players with different master point ranges.   We'll have more information in the future.  If you have any ideas for new and improved events at the bridge club, let us know.  Call the unit president, Richard Meffley, and the unit board will consider it.   The next unit board meeting is Thursday, April 20, at 5:30 p.m.

Draft minutes of unit board meetings will be posted at the clubhouse and will be available on the unit website.

PLACES  AND FACES
The place to be the last weekend of March was the Clovis Collectibles Street Fair and the San Joaquin Valley Quilters Guild Show in Clovis.  Dee Beebe had over a dozen entries in the quilter's show, and Rose Boot and Sue Vildosola had several more.
It's been a slow month for tournaments - but things are picking up.  Our nearest neighbors will be having sectionals soon.   Modesto's sectional is April 7-9.   Bakersfield will give out silver points April 27-30, and Visalia will host a tournament on May 19-21.   When you go, be sure to tell them how much you enjoy it when they visit out sectional.
Club series lessons on declarer play start at Clovis Adult School Friday April 21.   These lessons follow the beginning lesson series.
Get well wishes go to Ruth Wolcott.
Also get well wishes to George Sturges, who is visiting the hospital.
We welcome our new members, Judith Hecht of Madera and Judy Malone.
Our sympathy is extended to Charlene Sweet and her son Jim Sweet.  Fred Sweet, Charlene's husband and Jim's father recently passed away

CLUB NEWS

April is Charity month - several of our clubs have scheduled their annual Charity game this month.   The charities that we support appreciate your support.  Already there are changes!    The ACBLwide Charity game is Wednesday, April 5th - not April 19 per the printed newsletter.  There should be hand records and analyses for those who play.
Top master point winner for February at the Fresno Bridge Club was Wanda Cardella, for the second month in a row.  Of course, Wanda leads for 2006. Sharon Peterson and Ron Licata were the top 99er master point winners.  Sue Gearhart leads for 2006.
A wooden card holder is missing from the bridge club.   If you know who borrowed it, remind them to return it to the bridge club.
The Friday night game is off to a slow but improving start.  Please call Kay Chrisman if you need a partner the first two Fridays of April.   After that, Richard Meffley will help you find a good partner.
It was good to hear that Sandy Barnes was back in town for a visit.  Sandy was the director for Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night games many years ago.  The only problem we had is that our computer didn't remember he was a Life Master, so he came in third for February 99ers.
The top point winners in Oakhurst for February were Don McCartin , with 4.84, then Burke Zane 4.40, Paul Mertens 3.91, Muriel Trantham 3.74, and Wally Cucura 3.01.  Burke Zane and Al Crane had a 72.59 % game.
