NEW UNIT BOARD MEMBERS Congratulations to Paul Boyd, Kay Chrisman, Mary Lou Da Costa, Maggie Mahaffey, Richard Meffley, and Howard Reed who were elected to the unit board for 2006-2007. The first meeting will be Thursday, January 19 at 5:30 p.m. New officers will be elected, and regular business will be conducted. WINTER SECTIONAL FEBRUARY 23-26 It's almost time for our sectional again. Next month is the winter sectional. We will have pair games twice a day evening except for the Sunday Swiss teams. On Friday, there will be pair games at 9 am, 1 pm, and 7 pm. Saturday morning games will be at 10 a, with an afternoon game to follow. Every pair session will have a separate section for either 99ers, 199ers, or 299ers. We'll have programs out soon so you can plan your partnerships. Mun Takeda is partnership chairman. Please check with your regular partners, but call Mun at 284-3750 or 431-9215 if you can't find a partner. |

FACES Vivian Betcher Makes LM in Reno! Vivian Betcher with husband Rick won over 26 master points in Reno, most of them gold, to become only the second Fresno Life Master of 2005. They were second in BRacket 3 KO teams, third in bracket 4 KO teams, and won the bracket 2 compact KO consolation. As well as Vivian and Rick have been playing, Rick could be our first LM of 2006. Other Fresno winners were Bill Glass, third in B open pairs and fourth in the side game and Richard Meffley, second and third in KO teams and second in the Swiss teams. The Reno Regional was its usual festive affair. Free beer and snacks during the last session were nice. The Bulletin editor even had a quiz every day. Do you know the answers to these questions? What song includes the lyrics, Dwelt a miner, Forty-niner? What top 40 novelty song was recorded by Boris Pickett and the Cryptkickers? What musical instrument did Glenn Miller play? Plus over a dozen more. Once again weather was a problem - there were floods in Reno and landslides made it impossible to return home on New Year's Day on Interstate 80. Helpful hint - when driving through South Lake Tahoe, be sure to take the Pioneer Trail. We didn't, and spent four hours in downtown South Lake Tahoe - almost 12 hours to get home from Reno. In Palm Springs, Mun Takeda and Sally Perring were fifth in C in the side game and Mark Stern and Dave Shuster were second in B in the side game. We enjoyed our visitors Sheila and Wordy Price from England the week before Christmas, even though they beat the socks off us! Welcome to new members, Maja Anderson, Nancy Baker, and Kathryn Smith. We are saddened to learn that Don Tappe recently passed away. Don has not played for many years, but he and his wife Mary were regular players and partners at our club for many years. We remember Mary as the unit secretary for many years - a plaque on the clubhouse wall reminds us that the bridge timer was purchased in her memory. It pays to consider what things may look like from partner’s point of view, particularly when you are privy to some information that partner isn’t. |
CLUB NEWS Bridge is starting again on Friday nights, starting January 13, 2006 with a barometer game. The Thursday evening game has moved to every Friday night. Call 453-0620 or 978-1196 if you need a partner. Several players were in the overalls of the Western Conference Sectional Tournament at Clubs. Some of the events had 400 to 700 tables. Top Fresno winners were Wanda Cardella and George Sturges who were second overall on Thursday morning, winning 12.71 master points. Those who came in the overalls are listed in the winner circle with OA after their name. All Western Conference STAC winners are listed on the internet. The top master point winner in Madera for October was Ruth Rowe, with Larry and Gay Slates right behind. The top winners for September were Larry and Gay Slates, with Denny Green and Morgan Johnson following. Bob Mortimer, Denny Green, and Larry and Gay Slates are all within a point of each other for leading master point winners of 2005. Denny Green's nephews Dave Pfister and Brooks Pfister from Roseville visited the Madera Bridge Club, and came in first in November. Come back again! Rick Betcher was the top master point winner at the Fresno Bridge Club in November. George Sturges still leads for 2005. The 99er leader for November was Marlene Frasier. The 2005 99er master point leader is now George Efthemon. In Oakhurst, Burke Zane and Don McCartin had a 72.67 game. Congratulations!
