NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS  NOVEMBER 13
Sunday, November 13 is the Fresno Unit finals of the North American Pairs.  This is a sectionally rated game with red and black points for the winners.  Those who qualified at club games in  June, July, and August are eligible to play in this event.  A list of qualifiers will be posted at the Fresno Bridge Center and on the unit's website.   Those who qualify may play at the District 22 finals during the Palm Springs Regional on Saturday December 17.  The top three pairs in each flight there may go on to the national finals in Dallas, Texas next year.

FALL SECTIONAL

The Fall Sectional attendance was up this year.  We miss the Swiss teams, but it seems the pair games are more popular.   The Free Lunch on Saturday and Sunday was quite a treat - thanks to Jim Stefanich and Mary Jo Davila-Howard for preparing much of it.   Thanks go the Judy Nicholson and her committee of Jim and Mary Jo for the hospitality, plus all the unit members who brought snacking items.   We never lacked for finger food.       It's amazing some events have several pairs over 60 and even 70%, yet another event is won with 58% - sometimes the cards are just harder to figure out.
Warren Cederborg of Visalia was the top master point winner.  Gerard Laquerriere won the President's award, followed by Curt Reeves.   Pat Simpson won the 88er award.
We'll have additional results of the tournament in next month's news letter.

HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARTY

Thanks to Mike Molinari for organizing the October Halloween costume party and Swiss team club appreciation game.   Several members wore interesting costumes to make the event a lot of fun.  We enjoyed the refreshments, too.  We think the man in the clown suit was Bruce Smith, but he was very hard to recognize.   He looked like he just stepped out of a circus tent.

PLACES  AND FACES
At the Santa Cruz sectional, John and Della Schnell, with Jim Slinger and Susan Bertken, were second in the knockout teams and third in the Swiss teams.  Very good!
Welcome to new members Susan Errotabere and Marlene Wood.

UPCOMING EASYBRIDGE CLASSES
EasyBridge classes start at River Park Place on January 9th,  Monday from 6:30 to 9 pm (across from Villagio).  Club 55 will start Thursday January 12 from 1pm to 3:30 pm at the St. Agnes Administration Building.  Call Gloria Easterly at 261-0529 for more information
The Fig Garden Swim & Racquet Club class will continue as a 99er game Wednesdays from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm.   The Tuesday night game at the Fresno Bridge Club continues as a 99er.    If you know anyone who wants to learn to play bridge, please refer them to Gloria at 261-0529.

CLUB NEWS
The Thursday barometer game will move to Friday nights starting next January.   Watch for more information soon.
Wednesday night, November 30 at 7 pm is the ACBL Interclub game.  This is a club championship game played at many clubs throughout the country.   The recap sheets for every club and hand records are posted afterwards on the Internet.   Those who have the highest scores in the country may win fairly large master point awards.   Come try it!
At regional and national tournaments, there is usually an automatic penalty if cell phones ring during a session.   Cell phone rings are distracting to everyone in the room.    Talking in cell phones is nearly as distracting.  If you are expecting an important call, let the director know ahead of time, and answer the call away from the table  There are simple ways to disable the ring during a game.  Please turn off the ring when you are playing bridge.  Don't be surprised if the director penalizes you for your cell phone usage

The master point leader  for September is Rick Betcher.    George Sturges still has the  lead for 2005,  with Verlee O'Neill and Monique Irion right behind.
The 99er leader  for September is
George Efthemon, followed by Sandy Richardson and Pat Simpson.  Florence McDonald. Sandy Richardson still leads for 2005,  with Pat Simpson and George Efthemon following.  Click the links to get more complete lists.   The lists are updated every month on the home page of the unit website.

UNIT BOARD ELECTIONS

We have received some nominees for the unit board for the 2006-2007 term, but we need more volunteers willing to serve on the unit board.  If you or a unit member you know wishes to volunteer for the unit board, please contact our nominating committee: Sally Perring, Judy Nicholson, and John Renna We will mail out ballots with the next Aces Places and Faces.  If you have ideas that will help the unit, please nominate yourself so that you can make your ideas happen.  We appreciate the hard work that our board members do.

EDDIE KANTAR TIP:
The speed of the play, may be a clue to declarer's problem. When playing a 4-3 trump fit, play usually slows to a crawl.
