FALL SECTIONAL OCTOBER 27-30
Come play in our sectional the end of the month.   For the first time ever, all tournament events are pair games.   No team games at all.   There are nine sessions of pair games - Thursday at 1 pm and 7 pm, Friday at 8:30 am, 1 pm, and 7 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 10 am and 3:30 pm.  Each session will have an open section plus either a 99er, 199er, or 299er section - a section for everyone!
Tournament chairman Mark Stern has promised a Free Lunch Saturday and Sunday between sessions for all who play.   Who thought that was possible anymore?  Judy Nicholson and her committee will carry out that promise and more.   If you'd like to serve on the committee, just call Judy.   Or you can help with the "delicious free snacks during all sessions" by bringing one delicious snack for one of the sessions.   The Bakersfield sectional last weekend proved that the  members can make the hospitality of a tournament a delight.  Let's do as well.   Judy will have signup sheets at the bridge club so you can let her know if you are helping with any sessions.
We are not having Swiss teams because the attendance at our sectional Swiss teams has told us that our members are not enthusiastic about team games.  We love Swiss teams and we are sorry that we have to travel to other cities to play in them.   If you want more Swiss team events, come to the Halloween party and Club Appreciation Swiss team game on Sunday, October 23, and tell us that you want to play Swiss teams sometimes during our sectionals.   You may even win a gold point!

HALLOWEEN TEAM PARTY OCTOBER 23, 2005
Practice for Halloween - wear a costume to the party on Sunday October 23.   Costumes are optional, but fun and bridge are not.   We will have a Club Appreciation Championship Swiss team game, with 5% gold points going to all who win any matches.  Get your team of four together so that you can be part of the fun.  There will be signup sheets at the club.   Unit director Barbara Thacker can help if you need help getting four players together.  Mike Molinari is in charge of the event - he and his helpers will have snacks to liven up the party atmosphere. This is the only team game scheduled for October, so be sure to play.

EASYBRIDGE
Easybridge started Wednesday morning September 28 at 9 am.   If you have friends who want to learn, it is not to late to start.
Those interested can call Ginger at 224-9228 or Jim at 229-5048 for more information.
Beginning players who need a refresher may join in, but they should wait until about the fifth week or later.
PLACES  AND FACES

Congratulations to new bronze LM's Kay Chrisman and Hugh Miller.
Bakersfield had a great sectional.  Their members brought what seemed like endless tables full of delicious refreshments.   It seemed like there were over a dozen different kinds of things to eat at all times.   The Sunday Swiss teams was well attended, with nineteen teams competing.   We would like to see our future sectionals again have well attended Swiss teams.  Larry Cavanaugh and Jay Roll were the top master point winners, winning one pair event, and finishing second in another and in the Swiss teams.  Curt Reeves and Gerard Laquerriere were third in open pairs and won the Swiss teams with Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda.  Richard Meffley was third twice and first once, plus second in the Swiss teams with Blake Rundquist.
At the All Western regional in Santa Clara, Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda were second in the KO teams.   Jim Tritt won the evening Swiss teams and was 5th in the Swiss teams.   John and Tina Renna were fifth in the 299er pairs and second in the 49er pairs.  Richard Meffley was 9th in the Swiss teams.   Bill Glass was fifth in B in the side game.  At District 22's Costa Mesa Regional, Ruth Christianson was third in Bracket 3 KO teams.  Olivia Stockton and Annie Chiljian were third in 299er pairs.  Bert Rettner was third in the afternoon Swiss teams.  Richard Meffley was second in the afternoon Swiss teams.

The Madera Club will be way short of players in October.  Jackie Reichert is going to Tibet; Jan and Ed Armbruster are going to Washington DC and New England; and Larry and Gay Slates are going sailing down the Danube.   Maybe we'll get a postcard!

We're happy to report that Ted Johnson is now home recuperating.

Our wishes for a speedy recovery go to Fran Endara, who recently fell and broke her hip.

Our sympathy is extended to the family of Kay Brinker who recently passed away.

CLUB NEWS
Winners of the Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon "Guess Your Score" games were Steve Sharp and Dora Gostanian, who each won a free play for being best at guessing their score.

The master point leader  for July is Anita Penny.    George Sturges has taken back the master point lead for 2005.
The 99er leader  for July is Marlene Frazier, followed by Florence McDonald. Sandy Richardson still leads for 2005.
Click the links to get more complete lists.   The lists are updated every month on the home page of the unit website.
Everett Bondeson and Bob Mortimer were top Madera winners for August, with Ruth Rowe and Pearl McGinnis following just behind.

.       October is Club Appreciation month.  Each club has a club appreciation championship game - and there is also one club appreciation team game on October 23.   It is your club's and the ACBL's way of thanking you for playing and supporting the clubs and the ACBL.  Extra master points at no extra charge!  Check your calendar and play often.
Wow - a new stove has been delivered to the clubhouse.  If we learn how to use it, we won't have any more burned food.

KATRINA RELIEF
REBUILDING BRIDGE IN DISTRICT 10

The bridge clubs in the Biloxi/Gulfcoast Unit 180 and Louisiana Bridge Association Unit 134 were hurt badly by hurricane Katrina.   We learned today that District 10 has set up a fund to help bridge clubs rebuild.   Funds are only for reestablishing bridge.  Funds will be distributed to clubs and units after requests are made to District 10.  Items covered are insurance deductibles, replacement costs of buildings, building repairs, equipment, tables, and supplies not covered by insurance, rental of temporary space, assistance of teachers in reestablishing classes, etc.   Advances will be made pending insurance settlements.
Contributions can be made to Mid South Bridge Conference for Rebuilding Bridge in District 10.  District 22 is now considering a contribution - the Fresno Unit has not yet had a chance to discuss helping.   Districts 6 and 7 have already made generous contributions.
Our thanks go to those who held Katrina Relief Charity games, and those who played in them in September.  Proceeds from those games helped all the Katrina victims.

UNIT NEWS
Elections for the unit board of directors will be in December.  Now is the time to nominate members to serve the two year term on the board.  Our nomination committee is Sally Perring, Judy Nicholson, and John Renna.  Contact them if you wish to be nominated to serve on the board.   Or, contact them to nominate your partner or other unit member.   We need volunteers to help run the unit.   The unit runs four sectional tournaments each year, plus club games on Sunday and Wednesday.   Our purpose is to promote bridge in the area, which we do with these tournaments, plus helping start bridge instruction in Fresno,  providing a center for our members to play bridge in Fresno, and any other way we can promote bridge.   If you would like to help, get your name into nomination.   The rewards aren't too great - we don't even buy name badges, - but we need your help.

EDDIE KANTAR TIP:
Don’t compound a crime.  If you, or more likely partner, have made an error, do not lose your cool. Many contracts can still be beaten after one defensive error, seldom after TWO.
