| DISTRICTWIDE CHARITY GAME SEPTEMBER 18 The annual District 22 Charity game will be held at 1 pm Sunday September 18, right after the annual pot luck lunch. The ACBL Charity Foundation now distributes its funds to the districts to give to local charities. District 22 has not yet decided who will receive its charity allocations. Hand records with analyses will be available after the game. Please bring your favorite salad, main course, side dish or dessert to the pot luck and help enjoy the afternoon with us. ACBL INSTANT MATCH POINT GAME SEPTEMBER 14 This is a great game held every year in September. Clubs all over North America play the same hands at the same time. Many times national champion Richard Pavlicek provides analyses of all the hands in booklet form. The matchpoints for each hand are predetermined based on previous tournament results. When you open the traveling score, you see your exact match point score based on a 100 top for every hand. You can keep a running total of your score as you play! For games with at least 5 tables, there is a gold point for the winners plus additional black points.. Please come try to win the gold point. The game will be held at both the Fresno Bridge Club and the Madera Bridge Club. |
UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links California and nearby tournaments Bay Area TournamentsEASYBRIDGE STARTS UP AGAIN! Award winning presentations for newcomers to bridge starts up again on Wednesday, September 28 at 9 a.m. Jim Stefanich, with assistance from Ginger Zumwalt, will present EasyBridge. We want to offer a new EasyBridge series every year so that everyone who wants to learn can have the opportunity to join us. The Tuesday and Thursday afternoon players and the Tuesday evening players for the most part had their start with the EasyBridge. It's a fun way to learn the game. We will have flyers out at the bridge clubs. If you have friends that might want to learn the game, give them a flyer. If you can post a flyer at your club, store, library, or business place, please do. We'd like to get the word out to as many people as we can. The more people that know about the lessons, the more we can get to start. Be sure to remind your friends that the first four lessons are free. They can come and see if they like it, and continue if they when they find they are enjoying it. Each week is a short lesson followed by lots of bridge playing. Each session goes from 9 a.m. to about noon. Those interested can call Ginger at 224-9228 or Jim at 229-5048 for more information. Beginning players who need a refresher may join in, but they should wait until about the fifth week or later. |

Howard Reed and Pat Simpson were second twice in the 199er pairs at the Phoenix regional. At the NABC in Atlanta, Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda were fifth in the Spingold knockout teams, the most prestigious event of the tournament. They were also 16th in the national Swiss teams, and won the regional knockout teams. Jim Tritt and Rick Whitworth were 14th in the regional pair game and 37th in the national open pairs. Bob Durbrow and Richard Meffley were second in the regional pair game and 36th in the national open pairs. Richard Meffley was also 31st in the national fast pairs. Congratulations! Welcome to new members Bobbi Miller and John Miller, Jr. Also welcome back to Rose Smith. We're glad to see Rick Betcher is still playing bridge after taking a tumble on his bicycle and being airlifted to University Hospital. We're hoping for a speedy recovery. Fred Sweet was hospitalized recently and now is in Beverly Manor. Our sympathy is extended to Diane Cappelluti whose mother passed away last week. |
299er SECTIONAL HAS RECORD ATTENDANCE! Our fourth annual 299er sectional was the best yet. We had some players from the Los Angeles area, the Bay Area, Visalia, the coast, and even Angels Camp. We welcomed them with great hospitality. Hospitality chairmen Judy Nicholson and Dora Gostanian did a wonderful job keeping the refreshment table full. But they admit, much of the credit goes to the many 299er players who brought items for the hospitality table. We are thankful that so many of our members contributed to the tournament. Attendance was higher than any of the previous 299er sectionals. Top winners were Mun Takeda and Sally Perring, with 6.71 master points for the tournament. Congratulations! CLUB NEWS Mary Lou will have her annual lunch at 11:15 a.m. on Labor Day, September 5, followed by a Charity game. The master point leaders for July is Della Schnell, followed very closely by John Schnell. Della took over the lead for 2005 in July, but she doesn't think it will last once summer vacation is over. The 99er leader for July is .Sandy Richardson followed by Laura Da Costa and Ron Vieira. Sandy still leads for 2005. Click the links to get more complete lists. Denny Green, followed by Larry and Gay Slates, was the top winner for July in Madera .In Oakhurst, Don McCartin and Claire Molnar had a 73% game. Good job! . |
| LESSONS ON TUESDAY AND
WEDNESDAY EVENINGS Wednesday The Wednesday evening lessons continue every Wednesday about 6:40 p.m., just before the 7:00 game. Come every week and get a new lesson on an important bridge topic by Dave Shuster, Skip Miller, or Byron Steinert. September's lessons will be about one of bridge's most important topics - play of the hand. Each lesson will be about some aspect of play - maybe declarer play, maybe defender's play, or maybe even Barry Crane's rules on how to guess where the kings and queens are. How many Swiss team matches have you lost because you couldn't make three no trump and your partners couldn't defeat it? Maybe you'll learn why. TUESDAY Gloria Easterly will hold a workshop on Tuesday September 13 at 6:30 p.m. The subject is rebids. Those who take the workshop will learn about the making the best rebid and play hands which include instructive rebids. All players are invited to learn at the workshop. |
EDDIE KANTAR TIP: If partner makes a nice play, a kind word or two at the end of the hand goes a long way. FALL SECTIONAL OCTOBER 27-30 Don't forget our upcoming sectional. Lots of silver points go to all who win, place and show. Judy Nicholson and her committee will haveplenty of hospitality during the tournament - you are invited to join the committee and bring a food item for one session of the tournament. |
