| PLAY IN 299er
SECTIONAL AUGUST
13-14 Our fourth annual 299er Sectional is this month. Just think - a chance to win silver points without those pesky Life Masters in the way. Only players with under 300 master points are eligible. Game times are 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. The tournament ends with the traditional Swiss teams on Sunday afternoon. The other sessions all have Stratified 299er pair games. Also, there is a 0-5 game Saturday morning. EasyBridgers can play in that event for the low introductory price of $3.00 per player. Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning also include 49er sections, for those who recently started playing. In-between sessions you can relax with a free lunch plus an instructive lesson hosted by Byron Steinert and Skip Miller. Besides lunch, we'll have snacks, coffee and tea so you can keep up your strength for those tough games and slams. Our hospitality chairmen Dora Gostanian and Judy Nicholson are among the best. Come join in the fun! The regular Sunday unit game will be held at 3:00 p.m., the same time as the afternoon session of the 299er Sectional. |

Players are invited to a pot luck and bridge game. Call Jim or Lee for more information. There are flyers at the bridge club. A fond farewell goes to Irene Quiggle, who is moving to Arizona. Welcome to new member Jim H Luther of Bass Lake. Our Sympathy is extended to the family of Mary Alice Easton, who recently passed away. She moved to Sacramento in the last few years. Our condolences also go to the family of Shirley Anderson, who recently passed away. Speedy recovery wishes go to Bert Rettner, who is in the hospital with back problems. Ted Johnson is still recovering at the Armenian Home. Welcome back to Oakhurst director Paul Mertens, who was vacationing in Europe. WEDNESDAY EVENING GAME AND LESSONS The lessons provided before the Wednesday evening game are designed to help players communicate with their partner, hence the title of the series: "Bridge, - A Second Language." The Power Point Presentations, slides on the television set, start promptly at 6:40 p.m.. There will be one or two lessons on the play of the hand each month. Handouts are distributed after each lesson. Kay Chrisman, the director of the Unit's Wednesday evening game, will schedule an opportunity for Intermediate/Novice players with about 100 or more master points to play with a Life Master on the first Wednesday of each month. Kay is considering a separate restricted session, provided, at least three tables are in play, so that players can improve their partnership play. This session and lessons will help a dedicated partnership communicate better with each other and learn to play the same game together. Come out with your favorite partner, enjoy the food and improve your partnership play. Future lessons are: July 27th Negative Doubles August 3rd Play of the Hand 1.01 August 10th Reverses August 17th Forcing Major Suit Raises August 24th Opening Leads August 31st Two Clubs - Strong, Artificial & Forcing September 7th No Trump Openings September 14th Play of the Hand 1.02 |
CLUB
NEWS This is the last month for North American Pairs qualifying games. All club qualifying game are sectionally rated, with red points to the winners. Several clubs have scheduled them for this month, so check the calendar and see if you can win the red points. The Fresno unit has scheduled the unit finals for Sunday November 13. Those who play then can win more red points and qualify to play in the District 22 finals at the Palm Springs Regional on Saturday December 17. The Western Conference Swiss team STAC (Sectional Tournament at Clubs) games will be August 22 - 28. So far the Tuesday night 99er game (August 23) and John's Saturday game (August 27) have signed up to hold the team games. Get yourself a team and win some silver points! Don't forget John's Individual party on Saturday July 30. The Unit Pro-am was well attended - eight and a half tables of players - seventeen "pros " who had their amateur partner picked for them. We were listening for lessons and didn't hear any - I guess we followed Maggie's instructions - no lessons except by request. Thanks to Dora Gostanian and Judy Nicholson who gave us a real party atmosphere.
