SECTIONAL JUNE 10-12 It's time again for our silver point tournament at the Fresno Bridge Center. Friday through Sunday there well be stratified pairs and 199er pairs, plus strati-flighted Swiss teams Friday at 1 pm and all day Sunday. Mark Stern, our tournament chairman welcomes all players to the tournament. Hospitality chairmen Dora Gostanian and Judy Nicholson have planned treats for us. We always appreciate help from our members - please bring some finger food to one of the sessions. There will be sign-up sheets to help remind us to bring refreshments for the tournament. The events are listed in the calendar. If you need a partner, partnership chairman Jane McCoy (439-5206) may be of assistance. Complete schedules are available at your local bridge club. LEE MCKOANE MAKES LIFE MASTER! Lee McKoane, along with husband Jim, with David and Diane Zealear, were third twice in the bracketed knockout teams at the Victoria, British Columbia regional. They won over nineteen master points, which enabled Lee to become our first new Life Master of 2005. Congratulations! STOP!! There's been a lot of talk in the ACBL Bulletin letters about the stop card. Should we use it? Shouldn't we? It's a great tool if everyone uses it properly - to warn the opponents that a jump bid is coming up and they may have to think a bit. The opponent is required to wait about 10 seconds whether or not they have a bidding problem, whether or not the stop card is used, whether or not a skip bid warning is issued. The proper use of the stop card is to put it on the table before your bid card every time you are going to make a jump bid. It should remain on the table a few seconds with your bid card. The next opponent must not bid until after the stop card is removed. Leave it down for the full ten seconds. Stop card on the table, bid card, then off the table immediately does nothing but alert your partner that you jumped - that is improper and not the purpose of the stop card. That is what all the letters to the Bulletin are complaining about. If everyone uses the stop card properly every time they skip the bidding, there is no problem. |

Barbara Thacker and Hugh Miller, with Lorna and Vince Cheng, won the X Strat. In Flight B, Burke Zane, Paul Mertens, Don McCartin and Karen McCartin were second, with Michael Molinari, Paul Boyd, Sally Perring, and Mun Takeda third and Avis Morse, Kay Link, Howard Arquette, and Ray April fourth. All overall winners are on the ACBL web site. As usual, Visalia hospitality was outstanding. The tournament was well attended with twenty or more tables most sessions. The unit members brought lots of refreshments for every session. The Sunday lunch was inexpensive and delicious - lots of sandwiches, salads, and ice cream bars for dessert. Well done, Visalia! Welcome back to Gloria Easterly, who missed teaching EasyBridge for a few weeks during her recent trip to the hospital and recovery period. Virginia Johnson is recovering from surgery - hope to see her back at the bridge table soon. Irene Quiggle has also been under the weather but hopefully is on the mend. Anita Penny spent a few unpleasant days in the hospital recently but now is happy to be back at the bridge club and gaining her strength back. John Barrere is teaching bridge now to three tables of his freshmen physics students at University High School. They will be having three hours of bridge a day for three weeks. He's surprised at how the time seems to go quickly for most of the students. We hope they enjoy playing enough to continue when the three weeks are done. MENTORING PROGRAM You can still join the mentoring program. Ask a more experienced player to be your mentor, or call on of the unit directors - Maggie Mahaffey, Barbara Thacker, or Kay Chrisman and we may be able to help. Those who wish to mentor should let the the unit directors know that you are available. Players who participate in the mentoring program on Wednesday night or Sunday afternoon each receive a $1 discount. WEDNESDAY LESSONS The Wednesday evening Bridge lessons during the month of

There will be no lessons before the Saturday noon game in June and July. Kay Chrisman may give some talks on calling the director. John says to be nice to his substitute director. Thanks to those who participated in the Peggy Ochs Memorial Game and pot luck luncheon. There were seven tables in play and lots of things to eat. Our director Maggie Mahaffey named all the unit members who had passed away during the last year. After the lunch, we all played in the unit championship Irene Quiggle was the only one to guess her score and win a free play in Maggie's game. See if anyone else guesses right in the 299er game on May 31. EDDIE KANTAR TIP: You can't defend properly unless you remember the bidding. You can find more tips on Eddie's web site.
