SECTIONAL: BARBARA THACKER WINS PRESIDENTS AWARD MICHAEL MOLINARI WINS 99ER AWARD Barbara Thacker won flight B events three times and was third once to be the top Fresno unit master point winner in the sectional, beating Della Schnell by less than a point. Mike Molinari again won the award for top 99er master point winner. Pair games were popular, but team games again were not well attended. It's surprising that Fresno players don't seem to want to play in the Swiss teams when teams are so popular at every other tournament. Just go to any tournament and you'll find that knockout and Swiss teams are still the most popular events. Thanks go to all our unit member who helped out by bringing refreshments. The refreshments that members bring to a tournament go a long way to make tournament a success .... try going to other sectionals such as the upcoming Bakersfield, Modesto, and Visalia tournaments to see how much the atmosphere improves when the members pitch in to make the sectional a success. |
UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links California and nearby tournaments Bay Area TournamentsPEGGY OCHS MEMORIAL GAME The first Sunday in May is the annual Peggy Ochs Memorial game. On that day, we remember Peggy Ochs, who directed every afternoon at the bridge club for many years. When we had a party, she was the chief hostess. We also remember all the unit members and players who have passed away in the last year. A pot luck lunch will start at 12:15 May 1. Come enjoy the lunch and then play in the Unit Championship game at 1:00 p.m. |
THE QUILT Many thanks go to Dee Beebe for the donation of the lovely quilt which hung on the clubhouse wall last month. (Maggie really thanks her!) We raised $442.00 for the Building Fund. |
MENTORING PROGRAM The mentoring program is still going on. Ask a more experienced player to be your mentor, or call on of the unit directors - Maggie Mahaffey, Barbara Thacker, or Kay Chrisman and we may be able to help. Those who wish to mentor should let the the unit directors know that you are available. Mentoring can help you learn how the players in the higher and open games play. The unit will give a $1 discount to each player when a mentoring pair plays on Wednesday night or Sunday afternoon. If you can't make those dates, you can try mentoring on another date, but the unit discount won't apply. |
| PLACES AND
FACES Don McCartin of Bass Lake will have
a book signing at Barnes & Noble (7849 N. Blackstone)
on May 21, 2 pm to 4 pm, for the
book Perfect Justice, by Don
Lassiter. The book includes a biography of McCartin, and tells
about
the death penalty cases he presided over as a judge in Orange
County. It looks at the appeals process and the decisions of the
courts which overturned Rodney Alcala's death sentence twice.
Playing bridge was mentioned several
times, but as the main stories were the death penalty cases, the book
omitted details of bridge hands..

CLUB
NEWS The masterpoint leaders for February are Della Schnell, George Sturges, Verlee O'Neill, and Monique Irion, all with over ten points. Della leads for 2005. The 99er leader for March is Michael Molinari, followed by Lou Vancoevorden. Paul is the 99er leader for 2005. Click the links to get more complete lists. April is Charity month... please play in the charity games this month and any month when the games are scheduled. The Charity Foundation has changed its annual recipient. Instead of giving about $100,000.00 each year to a national charity, the foundation will give $20,000.00 to be distributed by districts every four years. District 22 will receive $20,000.00 in 2008 to be distributed to no more than five charities in California. The fifth Saturday of the month, April 30, is time for another Saturday extravaganza. John Schnell will host a pot luck lunch at 11 a.m. and an Individual game at noon. With individual games, you don't need to find a partner. Just come and you'll be able to play with a dozen or more partners. The top master point winners for the Madera Bridge Club in January were Bob Mortimer, followed by Denny Green, Everett Bondeson, and Rose Wheeler. The top February winners were Bill Hagopian, followed by Darleen Bewley, Paula Baraldi, and Pearl McGinnis. Bob Mortimer, followed by Denny Green and Larry and Gay Slates lead for 2005. Thanks to the Tuesday afternoon bridge players - who cleaned all the bidding boxes at the club. Looks great! OAKHURST NEWS HELEN HENDERSON We are saddened by the passing of Helen Henderson, who has managed the Oakhurst Bridge Club for about twenty-three years. She was also successful in real estate. There will be a memorial service for her on Saturday April 9 at 4 pm at Wittenberg Hall at the the New Community Methodist Church on Oakhurst. Paul Mertens, with assistance from Bobbie Schlagel and other directors, will be managing the Oakhurst Bridge Club for now. |
