IT'S TOURNAMENT TIME!
WINTER SECTIONAL FEB 24-27

Once again it's time for our winter sectional.   Nine sessions of bridge for those brave enough to play them all!   Every session has strati-flighted  or stratified pairs except the Swiss teams on Sunday.   There will be a separate 199er or 299er flight or event  every session.   Flights and events play separately from other groups.   Also there are novice games for those who just starting ( under 5 master points) on Friday at 7 pm and Saturday at 3 p.m.     Tournament chairman Mark Stern has planned events for everyone.
We will have snacks every session.   We would be grateful to any unit member who brings a snack to one of the sessions.
Again, Dora Gostanian is our hard working partnership chairman.   If you are without a partner, call her at 229-1578 so she can help you.   The schedule of tournament events is listed

Club owners will be issuing $1 discount coupons for 199er players to be used at the sectional.  Each player may use up to two coupons during the tournament for restricted sections.

UNIT NEWS
New Officers for 2005 are
President            Howard Reed
Vice President    Richard Meffley
Secretary            Sally Perring
Treasurer            John Renna

Distinguished Service Award

The 2004 Distinguished Service Award was awarded to Sandy and Ingrid Dippollet.   Sandy was the unit treasurer 50 years ago, and was again treasurer just before he passed away in 2002.    They set an example as a couple who played together - there was never a cross word between  them.   Ingrid's  frequent contributions to hospitality at our functions were always special treats.  They both were strong supporters of the Building Fund.  When Ingrid passed away last year, she left the Building Fund a large donation which  may encourage others to donate.  Thank you, Sandy and Ingrid.

WIN A QUILT!

Dee Beebe has donated a beautiful quilt for the Building Fund.   If you would like to win it, you can purchase tickets for $1 each.   The directors at the Fresno Bridge Club will be happy to sell you as many tickets as you like.  The winning ticket will be chosen at the winter sectional the last weekend in February.

  MEMORIAL FUND

Thanks to Mary Lou Da Costa for a contribution to the memorial fund in memory of Jack Burnett.    Money collected in the memorial fund is used to purchase special items for use at the bridge club.

FRESNO PLAYERS CONTRIBUTE TO TSUNAMI RELIEF

We received a request from ECATSBRIDGE  of England early in Janaury, too late for AP&F to announce, to play in evening games for Tsunami Relief  January 17 through 20.  Our Tuesday and Wednesday game directors, Gloria Easterly and Kay Chrisman, agreed to hold the games.    Hand records were e-mailed to us.    Kay spent hours  pasting and  printing the hand records because the format wasn't right for handing out after the games.  Thank you, Kay.
The results were scored here and transferred to England to be compared to other games throughout the world.    There were a few problems, but in two days the results for both games were posted on the Ecats website.  Ecats originally said they did not have time to do hand analyses, but they were able to post hand analyses for all the games on their website.   The above link has links to results and hand records, but direct links to Fresno games, both local and worldwide results,  can be found on the January calendar.

Congratulations to new Silver Life Master Barbara Thacker!

We are saddened to report that Annette Manson passed away in December at her daughter's home in Arroyo Grande.   Annette served as a board member and also helped Peggy Ochs run her many club games.  After Peggy passed away, Annette became a club director, too.   She was a superb hostess.   Long ago, unit board meetings were held at the board members'  homes.   It  is  impossible to  forget the wonderful cake she served when it was her turn.   We miss Annette.

NORTH FRESNO NEWS
Due to a very small table count we are closing the game on Tuesday at North Fresno.  We want to thank all of the very good and faithful players. Also, a big thanks to Kay Chrisman for the great job of directing and Kim Morris for all the administrative work for many years.   For all the players under 300 points Maggie welcomes you to her game on Tuesday afternoons at 1 oclock at the Clinton Avenue club.  For the players over 300 points you are welcome at all the various games all week long. Please refer to the schedule.  Zero tolerance is alive and well at all the clubs and all players are assured a great experience, so play often.

CLUB NEWS

George Sturges led again in December at the Fresno Bridge Club and took over the top spot for 2004 with 17.15 points for December and  141.67 for 2004, just passing Wanda Cardella.   Check the top 100 here for 2004.
Rick Betcher's December total was tops for 99ers, pushing him over the 100 point mark.  Paul Boyd was the top 99er for 2004, beating Rick by less than a point.  Review the top 99ers here.

John Schnell's Saturday noon game will now be an open game.   If you are reading this before January
29, don't forget, he's serving lunch at 11:15 a.m. with an individual game to follow at noon.

There are a few more Grand National Swiss teams for February.   Flight C (nonLM under 500 mp) can play Tuesday February 22.    All flights stratified can play on Sunday February 13 at 1 p.m.    It's Valentine's eve, so each lady will receive a Valentine rose.
