JACK BURNETTWe are sad to report that Jack Burnett passed away in November at age 98. He was one of the first to be awarded the Distinguished Service Award. He was treasurer of the Fresno Unit for over twenty-five years - longer than most of us have been members. Every year he made a gift to the Memorial Fund - and we thank him for his generosity. In the past, the pro-am Swiss Team was a hugely popular event - we usually had twenty to thirty teams. Part of the reason was that we asked every member of the unit to participate. For several years, Jack called every member. Many of them came to play even if they hadn't played all year. His personal touch helped make it fun to play bridge in Fresno. Jack hadn't played much bridge in the last year - but when he came to the bridge club, he was greeted warmly with many hugs. And he still played a good game of bridge. We miss Jack. |

Welcome to newly elected board members Judy Nicholson, Richard Betcher, John Renna, Dave Shuster, and Paul Messner. The first Unit Board meeting is scheduled for January 23, 2005, after the Sunday game. Election of officers and other business will take place. Our thanks to retiring board members Byron Steinert, Carolyn Smith, Laura NeVille, Mary Jo Davila-Howard, and Joyce Kauder. Byron has been president for the last two years. Carolyn has been our treasurer for the last four years. Both were instrumental in incorporating the unit and in starting the Building Fund and other projects to increase our membership. Without them, we never would have had a Building Fund. Laura has provided news to the Western Conference Contract Bridge Forum for many years and has always volunteered to help in all unit activities. Joyce and Mary Jo have been involved in our many Sunday unit activities. If there is a party to be planned, Joyce or Mary Jo was involved. Thanks again for all your work.

LESSONS Gloria Easterly is starting a new EasyBridge series at Club 55, every Thursday from 1 pm to 3:30 pm. Easybridge is a great way to learn to play from the very beginning. Call Gloria at 261-0529 for more information. Now is a great time for players with some bridge experience to join the River Park or Fig Garden Swim and Racquet EasyBridge groups and learn a few new things. The groups are now learning some conventions and will be starting the second series soon. Call Gloria Easterly for more information. THE FRIENDLY TOURNAMENT I had the pleasure of playing with Bruce Reeve, president of ACBL for 2004 at the Palm Springs regional. District 22 always invites the current and the upcoming president to the December Palm Springs regional so that the current president can present the gavel of office to the new president, who is Roger Smith of Sacramento. When I played with him, he introduced us to every pair that we played against. It's so easy to do - he just said "Hello, I'm Bruce, and this is Richard.' Nearly every one returned the favor and introduced themselves. It surely makes the game more enjoyable when you do that. Try it next time you go to a tournament or to a game when you don't know your opponents.

| PLACES AND FACES Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda 2nd in North America Several Fresno area bridge players enjoyed the Florida weather and won master points too at the nationals on Orlando. Farid Assemi, Ed Wojewoda, Jim Tritt, Shirley Blum, Richard Meffley, Rose Boot, John and Tina Renna, and Mary Morgan came home with master points from the sunshine state. Ed Wojewoda and Farid Assemi were second in the North American Swiss Teams, and 16th in the Board-a-Match teams. They also were third in the KO teams. Farid Assemi, Shirley Blum, and former Fresnan Steve McConnell won section top prizes in the Blue Ribbon Pairs. Steve McConnell and Richard Meffley were first and second in the compact bracket 2 KO consolation. With Jim Tritt, they were fourth in the regional Swiss team. Rose Boot had a section top in the stratified pairs and took 4th in the bracket 6 KO teams. John and Tina Renna were third in the 49er pairs. Congratulations! At the Palm Springs Regional, Rick Whitworth was first and second in KO teams, and fourth in Swiss teams. Richard Meffley won the open pairs. Congratulations! Juan and Suzanne Sobenes were featured in the City section of the Bee - they've run hundreds of marathons together. And you thought bridge players just sat around playing cards all day! Exercising the muscles is good for all bridge players. Please correct Rosalie Kearns Jorgensen's phone number in the new roster to 431- 4779. Welcome to new members Julie Beecher, Joanne Cohen, Dale Hammel and Juliette Hammel, Angelina Heisdorf, Vera Lovalvo, and Windsor Pell. Our condolences to the families of Billie Campbell and Lois Barger who recently passed away. Billie recently played in Fresno and has been playing regularly in Oakhurst. Lois moved to Bakersfield a few years ago and has played for several years |

The Unit is holding a Swiss Team qualifying game for the North American Pairs on Sunday, January 23. Get your team together to play. Sunday January 16 is also birthday Sunday. We'll have birthday cake to celebrate January birthdays. If your birthday is in January, you play free. If your birthday is January 16, we'll blow up a birthday balloon just for you! We had lots of overall places in the Western Conference Sectional Tournament at Clubs. For the week, there were 7,800 tables played throughout the west. The Tuesday night 99er game, and the restricted games Tuesday morning and Saturday afternoon were the only games of their kind for the session, so everyone who placed well here were in the overalls. Most of the 299er players on Tuesday and Thursday were also in the overalls. Others in the overalls were Mary Lou Da Costa and George Sturges, first at the North Fresno Bridge Club: Yvonne Jeffrey and Larry Miller, second overall in C; Gerard Laquerriere and Mark Stern, first overall; and George Sturges and Richard Meffley, seventh overall. Well Done! |
